Travel Advisory:
- Attraction openings and closures: The government of Sikkim recently announced the reopening of most of its towns and hill stations, including Gangtok, to tourists since the devastating floods that affected the northern parts of the state in late 2023. The place has been deemed safe to visit after further assessment, and the weather has become more 'soothing' in time with the festive season.
- Weather conditions: Summer, particularly the months between March and May, is the best season to visit Gangtok, with temperatures that range between 18 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 25 degrees at its peak. Locals who live in tropical parts of India and elsewhere usually frequent the area at this time to avoid scorching heatwaves and soaring temperatures. Gangtok also experiences varying degrees of rainfall throughout the year, with the heaviest occurring in the monsoon months of July to September. In wintertime, decreasing temperatures to single-digit numbers and snowfall are commonplace.
- Tourism-related information: Tourists who intend to travel to Gangtok will need to apply for a Travel Card upon entry to the city. The Travel Card will be used for verification, especially when you encounter enforcement authorities. You can fill out the required information by yourself or with the help of a certified travel agency or hotel management.
Traveler's tips
If you're looking forward to Kanchenjunga views, make sure to also visit Tiger Hills for the sunrise. Trust me, it's a game-changer. I remember waking up super early and heading there. The way the first rays of the sun hit the Kanchenjunga snow peaks is something out of a fairy tale. It's chilly up there, so bring a jacket, but the view is worth every shiver. Get there early to grab a good spot; it's popular for a reason.

About Kanchenjunga
The Kanchenjunga is one of the highest mountains in the world and is often referred to as Killer Mountain because of its difficult terrain that has resulted in many deaths among climbers. Nonetheless, it’s unmatched beauty attracts climbers from all around the world. According to Expedition Himalaya, it has an untouched summit! Following an age-old tradition of showing respect towards the mountain, climbers always stop right before the summit and never step foot on it.
The mountain is also part of Khangchendzonga National Park (or Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve), which is a UNESCO-designated site in Sikkim featuring many other stunning natural attractions.
Tips for visiting:
The best time to visit or trek the mountains is during spring and autumn. During autumn, the area enjoys clear skies and you’re more likely to spot all the five peaks! Meanwhile, spring offers pleasant weather conditions, greenery, and wildlife sightings. For trekkers, it’s best to visit in November for less crowded treks.
Visitors will require two permits to visit Kanchenjunga. These are the Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (10 USD per person, per week) and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (23.93 USD per person). You will be asked to present these mandatory documents by the police at various points and denied entry in case you fail to provide them.
