Most people traveling to Sri Lanka will spend at least a night or two in Colombo, either to recover from flights, to extend their visas, or just to visit the capital. Colombo is a fairly crowded, hot and noisy place, so if you are looking to get out of the immediate city buzz but still be close enough to get all your errands done, Home as Home Sky Room Airbnb offers an excellent option. With 33 USD per night, you will get a top floor apartment, which is big and peaceful enough for longer stays, and also suitable, for instance, for digital nomads requiring a good working environment and fast internet.

The apartments and your host

Sky Room

At Home as Home Sky Room, you can easily escape the noise and heat of the city as the apartment is located on a quiet street in the Mount Lavinia district of Colombo and equipped with 2.7 meter (9 feet) tall windows plus an air-conditioning, ensuring a good night sleep! Additional amenities include a TV, free Wi-Fi, hot shower and a large outside terrace with a small kitchenette. Breakfast is not included in the price, but there are plenty of coffee shops and local bars nearby for you to have a snack in the morning.

The apartment is suitable for singles or a couple as it only has one double bed. However, the host actually has two apartments in the same building, so if you are traveling as a group or with a family, the third floor apartment has space for additional two people (29 USD per night). Both apartments are excellent in terms of cleanliness and comfort!

Your host, Benjamin Yoga (what a nice last name!) is a kind extrovert who is passionate about photography and the beauty of his home country, Sri Lanka, so he is definitely able to recommend plenty of places to visit during your stay!

Beautiful Mount Lavinia Beach

Locals at Mount Lavinia Beach

The best place for morning or even walks would be the Mount Lavinia Beach, which is only five minutes walk away from the apartment. In the area closest to the apartment, you will find plenty of touristy beach restaurants, but when you head more up North towards Dehiwala, soon you’ll notice that you are the only tourist around. It’s lovely to watch the local kids play on the beach, and if you go earlier in the morning around 8 AM, you might catch the fishing boats arriving back from the sea - and most likely they would appreciate a helping hand getting back to the shore!

Where and what to eat

Himagiri Hotel

The small, local places are generally the ones with the best foods. In Sri Lanka, many of these local cafes and restaurants are called “hotels”, but actually they are just ordinary cafes. For instance, when you walk up to the main street from Home as Home and turn South, across the road there is a small local restaurant called Himagiri Hotel. They do excellent hoppers and macaroni - especially macaroni is a nice change for the endless rice in Sri Lanka!

In the evening, if you are looking for something more romantic, head to Barracuda. It’s a bit of a long walk away from Home as Home, in Dehiwala district, but only a few minutes by tuk tuk. It’s a beautiful place with excellent food, and you can choose to eat on the beach, in the light of a torch.

See a different side of Colombo

As mentioned, Colombo can get hectic at times, but Home as Home in Mount Lavinia offers a peaceful and relaxing stay while you are there. Near the apartment, you will find everything you need from shopping malls to various restaurants, parks and the beach, but yet you are perfectly hidden above it all in the Sky Room.
