The sights, smells, tastes, and sounds of Lisbon are exhilarating delights for the senses, but it can all be a lot to take in. At the end of the day, or perhaps maybe even in the middle of the day when the soporific afternoon heat of summer is at its strongest, the luxury comfort of a hotel is a welcome respite. Lisbon offers an expansive array of hotel options, whether you’re looking for luxury, convenience, or a private oasis of calm. Here are our top 10 picks on where to stay in Lisbon:

1. Valverde Hotel (From 308 USD)

Hotel Valverde lives up to its reputation! The staff is top notch, welcoming, informative and helpful from start to finish. Our room was beautifully appointed with the most comfortable beds of our stay in Portugal! The location is perfect. The breakfast absolutely delicious! We loved Valverde and highly recommend to travelers looking for a lovely boutique experience in Lisbon. Pamela K
Right in the middle of the impressive Avenida da Liberdade, the 35th most expensive avenue in the world with famous luxury brands gracing its storefronts, Valverde Hotel is luxury at its best. The location is ideal, especially since it is situated in the flattest part of Lisbon. Also, the verdant gardens of the 19th-century Botanic Gardens and Parque Eduardo VII, the largest park in central Lisbon, are within an easy strolling distance. Shop until you drop … quite literally onto the fluffy white sheets in your cosy room! All 25 rooms of this boutique hotel are styled individually, incorporating furniture from the 1950s into the design. The warm palette of the rooms and thoughtfully-chosen paintings that adorn the walls create an inviting ambiance. Some rooms overlook the courtyard while the suites offer views of Lisbon’s sun-baked red roofs.

The on site restaurant, Sitio Restaurant, offers views of the lush courtyard and heated swimming pool. Guests can bask in the warm Lisbon sunshine on the enchanting outdoor terrace by the pool. If your muscles are sore from attacking the hilly terrain of Lisbon, request a massage treatment in the comfort of your hotel room. The service staff are attentive and friendly and take effort in providing that extra touch for guests.

Valverde Hotel may be small but it packs a powerful punch and delivers in all the right ways.

Moments away from Lisbon’s main railway station, Cais do Sodre, the LX Boutique Hotel is situated in an up-and-coming area. The hotel is divided into 5 themed floors that showcase the different facets of Lisbon: the Tagus River, Fado, Seven Hills, Barrio Alto, and Pessoa, the early-20th-century poet who used to stay in the building. The light-filled rooms are charmingly decorated in accordance with their themes and the resulting atmosphere is informal and refreshing. Complimentary Portuguese egg tarts and port wine are also available for guests at the lobby daily. The hotel’s restaurant, Confraria do Sushi, is popular even among the locals and serves up some amazing sushi. Make reservations ahead of time if you plan to dine there as it can get pretty crowded.

6. Lisboa Carmo Hotel (From 160 USD)

Amazing breakfast buffet, definitely worth purchasing. We could not have asked for a better location, would urge everyone to stay here just for that. It shaped our whole Lisbon experience. The square is so nice to hang out in during the evenings after exploring the city, and the military museum across the street is very informative about the history of Lisbon and Portugal. The train station is incredibly convenient, but the hotel is still quiet and feels more private. Absolutely stay here to get the best out of Lisbon.

Erica

10. Fortaleza do Guincho (From 235 USD)

Staff extremely welcoming and helpful. We were able to check in 2 hours early. Restaurant amazing. Wonderful meal with outstanding sea views from the restaurant. Lovely beach by the side of the hotel with a great beach bar. Travel Wren
Sitting on a rocky promontory that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean, this renovated 17th-fortress turned 5-star hotel overlooks the surfers’ paradise of Guincho Beach. The lighthouse of Cabo de Roca in the distance, Europe’s westernmost point, is also a part of the dramatic backdrop. Winding stone staircases, exposed brick walls, and wrought-iron chandeliers help retain the medieval charm of the site. The 27 rooms are also designed in keeping with the cultural heritage of the fortress, with rich fabrics, vaulted ceilings, and gold-framed paintings. It is worth a visit to the Michelin-starred restaurant that serves an outstanding assortment of Portuguese and French-inspired dishes, accompanied with an expansive wine list. There is no swimming pool within the hotel, but really, why would you need one when the vast pool that is the Atlantic is right at your doorstep?

At the end of the day, enjoy the spectacular sunsets from the privacy of your room or from the restaurant’s terrace and watch as the blue waters take on shimmery hues of yellow and gold.
