You could say Lampedusa is Italy, but not really Italy. It’s nine hours by ferry, 45 minutes by plane from the mainland, 70 miles (113 km) from Tunisia in Northern Africa, but world’s away from anything Italian (except for the language and the many bars). The island is a geographical contradiction, flat, dry rocky scrub with little vegetation, yet home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and hidden coves. The African influence is evident in the cuisine and in the prevalence of “dommusos”, traditional Lampedusan rustic countryside houses with African architectural and decorative influences.
