Sóller is near the north-west coast of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands of Spain. The town sits between the mountains and the sea in a valley of orange groves. Most people who take the trip from Palma to Sóller come in a vintage train which passes through the beautiful scenic countryside. The tram’s main station has been restored as a museum of Picasso and Joan Miró. There are many historic residences representing different types of architecture. La Posada de Can Prohom is an 18th-century Baroque, La Casa de la Luna is a 15th-century building and La Posada de Montclair is an 18th-century Neoclassical palace. Many of the most lavish houses are situated on the Gran Via Avenue and are said to have been built with ‘orange money’. The centre of the town is the Plaça Constitució surrounded by cafés, tapas bars, and pastry shops where you can try some freshly squeezed local orange juice. The Baroque church of Sant Bartomeu faces the east side of the Plaça and is flanked town hall and the Banco de Sóller, a 1912 Modernista building. The surrounding countryside is so beautiful that hiking is a major draw, whether it’s coastal walks or walks in the Tramuntana mountain range.
