Antwerp is a beautiful city in Belgium that is wonderful for spending a day to explore and savour good food. There are so many different things to try from Belgium fries to waffles. There are also many beautiful sites to see along the way, including the beautiful and historic old town. Read on for a 1-day recommended guide to see the best of Antwerp!

Start your day at the central train station

Antwerp Central Station

The Antwerp train station is absolutely beautiful. Its architecture is truly magnificent and so grandiose it has been named the the most beautiful train station in the entire world! The beauty of the train station is a mixture of different types of architecture styles. It is not a site to be missed. When you are finished visiting the train station, you can head over to Keyserfriet to get some delicious Belgian fries.

Keyserfriet is located on De Keyserlei 54, and is just a five minute walk from the train station. I would recommend getting a fried cheese croquette, and a side of Belgium fries. The trick to these delicious fries is that they are twice fried. This makes the outside crispy, but the inside soft. It’s quite common to eat the fries with mayonnaise, which is a delicious choice.

After you finish your fries, you can head over to the historical part of Antwerp. You can walk there in about twenty minutes, so you can explore the part of the city.

The most convenient way would be to take the tram located near the Antwerp Central station. The station number is 15 and is located outside of the Antwerp Central station. It is called Antwerpen Premetrostation Diamant. From there you can take the number 15 tram towards Boechout-Linkeroever. The tram ride will take five minutes (three stops). You want to get out at Antwerpen Green Station (Groenplaats). From there you will be within the old historical city of Antwerp.

In the old city center, there are plenty of eating places to get anything from waffles to Belgium beer. There are several chocolate shops within this area as well. If you are looking for a place to try a Belgian waffle, then you should head over to The Waffle Factory. It is located at Grote Markt 60. Here you should try a Waffine, which is an thin waffle, that is cut in half. Inside is filled with delicious dark Belgian chocolate. I would definitely recommend getting a coffee to go along with it. The area is great for hanging out and enjoying your afternoon.

From the old town, you will be able to see the beautiful Antwerp cathedral, better known as Cathedral of Our Lady. You can take beautiful photos from a distance, since the cathedral is so massive. The gothic style cathedral stands 120 meters (390 feet) in height! The construction of the church started in 1352. If you would like, you can go inside to admire the cathedral as well. The hours are Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Saturday is from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday is from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please be advised that you should dress modestly, since it is a holy place.

Best times to visit

Antwerp is a beautiful city to visit year round. The summer time tends to have very nice weather with temperatures reaching 18 Celcius (64 Fahrenheit). However, there tends to be a lot of tourists during this time. The winter months are less busy, but the weather can be rainy and windy.
