Tip from tour guide
It may surprise you but I'm not a big fan of St. Patrick's Day. Everywhere is crowded and overpriced and the day gets crazy with heavy drinking by mid-afternoon. Quite a lot of Irish people feel the same so it's often just tourists dressed in green plastic hats crowding the city with a cliched view of Irish culture. (P.S. Never say "top o the mornin to ye" and "where's me lucky charms" or order an "Irish car bomb" here.) Until the 1970s, all bars used to be closed on St. Patrick's Day as it was a religious day of observance.
St. Patrick himself however is a very interesting character. According to the legendary version, he introduced Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century, used the shamrock (clover) as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity, and banished all snakes from Ireland. Much of this was made up centuries after his death. However, we can say with some certainty that he did exist, and written sources survive to support this. One is the "Confessio", a mini-autobiography from the 5th century. According to this source, Patrick was originally a slave from Roman Britain taken to Ireland against his will. With the help of an angel, he later escapes but returns to Ireland to spread Christianity. The sculpture featured here is from the Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle. It contains another major anachronism, a bishop's miter, which didn't originate until after the Renaissance.
