Kamphaeng Phet is both a Thai province in the lower north of the country and the name of the main provincial city. If you are planning to visit this somewhat off-the-beaten path part of Thailand, a fantastic way to maximize your time by combining an attraction and your accommodation is to stay at Phra Ruang Hot Springs.

Known locally at Bueng Sap, the hot springs are located around 25 kilometres from the city centre and are well-signposted. Good roads make it easy to drive here yourself, or several tour operators can arrange a stay. It is also possible to take a taxi to the hot springs. Whilst the hot spring complex is open for members of the public between 8am and 5pm, visitors can also spend the night in a charming and cozy bamboo and wood traditional style bungalow. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and with the hot springs almost right on the doorstep, you are all but certain to have a restful sleep.

There are several different room types and sizes available, including larger options for groups and families and cute bungalows for two people. The basic bungalow for two is equipped with air conditioning and hot water and costs just 500 THB (approximately 14 USD) for a night.

The bathrooms are partitioned into a showering area and a place for the toilet and sink. If you are tired of getting your towels and clothes wet in the usual wet rooms around Thailand, this will be a welcome change! Wooden furnishings add to the rustic appeal, yet those seeking a few creature comforts will not be disappointed to find a large television and hot drink making facilities in the bungalows. And technology addicts needn’t worry – there are plenty of sockets to charge your gadgets and gizmos!

After soaking in the springs and relaxing on the wooden verandah whilst enjoying the views and maybe a drink or two as the sun goes down, sink into the comfortable double bed for a good night’s sleep. The bungalows are a good distance away from each other, offering plenty of privacy and a tranquil atmosphere. Parking is available close to each bungalow.

There is an onsite restaurant that serves a basic assortment of typical Thai fare, such as varied rice dishes and noodles. A small shop sells drinks, snacks, and basic toiletry items – so don’t worry if you realize that you have forgotten something important! There are also several small shops just outside the entrance to the hot springs. It is possible to arrange for a traditional and invigorating Thai massage in the privacy and comfort of your own room. Simply dial the phone number, tell them which bungalow you are staying in, and an experienced masseuse will come and soothe away any aches and pains.

A river runs alongside the grounds, with lush greenery, colourful flowers, and fruit trees either side. This helps to add to the serene and countryside vibe. Pedal boats can be rented for fun and giggles on the large glistening pond, and the small shrine at the entrance adds a dash of Thai culture to your trip.

Hot springs

When talking about facilities and amenities, the highlight is definitely the hot springs. The water temperature ranges between 40 and 65 degrees Celsius (104 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit) and there are five underground water sources. There are small wooden seating areas where you can soak your feet in the pleasantly warm water, with canopies providing welcome shade during the sunniest times of the day. And one of the best parts? There are no additional charges for guests of the resort to chill out whilst dangling their feet in the water!

The mineral-rich waters have long been believed to have properties that are beneficial for the health, and numerous people have visited the site over the years to bathe in the waters as an attempt to ease a number of conditions, usually related to muscle and joint problems. They are, however, also nice for just relaxing and taking it easy.

Unlike many hot springs, there is no sulphur in the water; it is, therefore, possible to drink the water. Although, you probably wouldn’t really want to!

Even MORE springs!

If you want a full body soak, head to one of the enclosed bath houses, which can accommodate around four to five people each. Clean and tidy, you could spend hours soaking in the inviting water. There is an extra charge for the indoor facilities. There are also cold springs within the complex. Enjoy alternating between hot and cold water to really get your circulation pumping!

Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is one of the city’s main attractions, with ruins from the Sukhothai era (mid 1200s to mid 1300s). Unlike some of the more famous ancient cities, the ruins in Kamphaeng Phet have been largely left for nature to take its course and have not been renovated. This lends them a slightly wild and rugged air, with dense patches of forest found around the ruins and lots of small wildlife. They are a lot quieter than other sites too, meaning that you can explore in relative peace and quiet away from the tourist masses.

There are several stunning national parks in the area as well, some of which have lovely cascading waterfalls and deep, dark caves. The national parks offer great hiking and incredible views. Other attractions in the vicinity include a gushing and spurting geyser, the remains of the old city wall, interesting museums, lively markets, the city shrine, and several temples from different periods of time.

Enhance your stay in Kamphaeng Phet and get lucky!

Stay at Phra Ruang Hot Springs for a terrific addition to your Kamphaeng Phet experience. And, if you listen to local legends, you may also take away more than you anticipated; supposedly, if you take some of the water home with you, it will bring you good fortunes and luck!
