If an artist’s loft were converted into a chic, boutique hotel, the result would probably be something akin to Hotel El Ganzo.
The newly reopened property is the only hotel in Los Cabos, and in Mexico for that matter, that has its own in-house recording studio that attracts musicians from around the world who come to create, collaborate and get inspired.
The boutique hotel also regularly hosts an artist in residence – painters, sculptors or other sorts – who are given free reign to create artwork in the public spaces.
All of which results in a young, cutting edge vibe that is totally unexpected in a mature, luxury destination like Los Cabos.
Hotel design & amenities
Everything about Hotel El Ganzo, which just reopened in November 2015 after extensive renovations in the wake of Hurricane Odile, oozes edgy, stylish cool. The atmosphere and look of the property is less old money luxury, more thirtysomething and living life with full appreciation of the world and all of the textures, colors and music it has to offer. It is a small, 69-room establishment where you’re likely to be sitting at breakfast next to the in-house musicians you saw on stage performing the night before and could very well bump into the artist in residence at work while strolling around the property.
In addition to stumbling upon artwork at every turn, there are many luxe details and posh amenities here. Among the most notable is the stunning infinity pool that occupies about 2,013 square feet on the hotel’s rooftop and overlooks the sparkling Sea of Cortez. Right next to the pool meanwhile, there’s a sushi bar - just in case hunger strikes while you are enjoying the unobstructed, panoramic sea views.
For those who prefer the ocean, El Ganzo’s private beach club is yet another alluring option; a quiet, pristine stretch of sand that lulls you into the laid back mood and mindset of the destination. Activities, in addition to merely basking in the sun and relaxing, include paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing.
Guestrooms at Hotel El Ganzo are a story told in white, with splashes of vibrant color and wood detailing. The linens, walls, and furnishings are nearly all white. Yet other pieces in each room are made from a light, knotted wood that looks as if it was reclaimed from the Baja region after the hurricane. The result is a stylish, sophisticated accommodation.
The beds are as comfortable as the room design is striking. Fitted with 400 thread count linens, comforters and pillowcases from Rivolta Carmignani, the Italian leader in luxurious fine linens, you’ll want to hit the snooze button a half-dozen times each morning in order to spend extra time in this cloud of comfort. (Perhaps consider even ordering room service for breakfast.)
Other nice details that come with Hotel El Ganzo guest rooms include flatscreen televisions, iPads (to provide information about everything from room service to spa offerings), and full-size organic bath products in the bathroom.
The various categories of rooms at Hotel El Ganzo include standard suites, large suites, very large one bedroom suites and very large two bedroom suites, among others. No matter which you choose, they all come with the same signature artist-inspired look and style.
Los Cabos is synonymous with relaxation and pampering and the spa at Hotel El Ganzo rises to the occasion.
The five room spa is a quiet retreat that offers a variety of indulgent ancient healing rituals based on Mayan and Mexican traditions. There’s everything detoxifying, agave-scrubs that include Mezcal Rituals and more traditional Swedish massages.
After your treatment, don’t miss the opportunity to dip into the therapy pool, sauna, or steam room.
The food at Hotel El Ganzo emphasizes gourmet, farm-to-table offerings. For those who want to continue a healthy lifestyle while on vacation, try one of the hotel’s many vitamin-packed fresh pressed juices that blend such things as carrot, kale and other vegetables.
El Ganzo’s main restaurant on the first floor is where you can find breakfast, lunch and dinner. Popular offerings include chilaquiles to start the day, tacos and ceviche for the afternoon and mouth watering offerings such as lion paw scallops for dinner.
The rooftop Gachoo Sushi Bar specializes in raw cuisine, with ceviches, carpaccios, tempura and sashimis.
Room service meanwhile offers an equally outstanding selection of food as the main restaurants. And even at the beach club, there’s plenty on the menu to keep you satisfied.
Why choose Hotel El Ganzo?
By many accounts, Los Cabos is the comeback story of 2016. And nowhere is that story more vividly told then at Hotel El Ganzo – a property that manages to effortlessly serve as both an artistic center and a great beach getaway.
