Hotel Savegre is a mere 89 kilometers (55 miles) south of San Jose, Costa Rica, or about two hours by car. Conveniently located 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) off the Pan-American Highway, the Lodge is nestled alongside the Savegre River and surrounded by montane oak trees. The natural forest and surrounding valley habitat includes about 400 hectares (988 acres) at 2,195 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level. This beautiful valley is surrounded by one of the richest cloud forest habitats in Central America.

The basics for your body but luxury for your mind and soul

Savegre Mountain Lodge Rooms

Hotel Savegre (also known as Savegre Mountain Lodge) offers 41 rooms: 21 standard rooms and 20 junior suites. The main lodge includes a small gift store, reception, a restaurant, and a bar/lounge. The accommodations, scattered in rows and cottage buildings across the main property, include a private bathroom with plenty of hot water and a small space heater or fireplace. While the room furnishings are basic, no frills, they are comfortable and well-maintained. Water in the rooms is safe for drinking.

A computer with Internet is provided for guest usage. Wi-Fi is also available in many parts of the property if you brought your own laptop. International phone service is available in the main lodge.

The Chacon family has lived and farmed in this valley since 1955. They strive to provide personal attention and family-style hospitality to all their guests. The family’s interest in conservation and environmental protection is obvious throughout the grounds — from their extensive trail system through pristine oak forests to the landscaping maintenance.

On the top of many birdwatcher lists is the Resplendent Quetzal. The Chacons have established a Quetzal Education and Research Center, with the help of researchers from several countries, to educate guests about this magnificent bird. There are several Quetzals that nest in the forests nearby.

At the lodge, hummingbird feeders will keep you entertained. Many other birds and butterflies live in the gardens and along the river. The area is considered the best location to see a large selection of Chiriqui Highland endemics species. The nearby Paramo habitat, above the lodge, provides excellent birding opportunities.

Temperatures at the lodge are typically very mild in the daytime but may be very chilly at night due to the altitude. A fleece-style jacket or vest with light gloves will be appreciated by those up early or late.

Rates begin at 54,508 CRC (100 USD) per person, per night, for double occupancy during the low season (May 1 – November 14); there is a single supplement of 22,894 CRC (42 USD) per night for solo travelers. Rates are slightly higher during peak season (November 15 – April 30).

This price includes 3 meals for each night’s stay, coffee, tea, and fruit juices. Sodas and alcoholic beverages are extra. Rates are available exclusive of meals as well.

Las Bromelias & Las Robles

Las Robles Fireplace (Bar & Lounge )

Las Bromelias Restaurant offers an excellent buffet and a la carte options of international and traditional cuisine to guests. Guests consistently give high marks for the chefs and the food.

Meals are served in a large dining hall inside the main lodge. Meals can be buffet with a large selection of salads and entrees or by menu; this depends on the number of guests staying onsite at the time. A significant part of the cuisine is grown on the family farm and prepared Costa Rican style (hearty, savory but not spicy, and always satisfying accompanied by fresh coffee and fruits of every shape and color) by chefs onsite.

Local river trout is the specialty of the house and caught fresh from nearby streams. Fruit orchards and fresh garden vegetables enhance the main course selections. Each entrée is presented in appetizing and enticing ways.

Las Robles Bar and Lounge, just behind the restaurant, is an ideal place to relax and enjoy a drink with family and friends. It is also a great place to meet new friends as you share your day’s experience after exploring the cloud forest.

Del Rio Spa and other amenities available

Resplendent Quetzal

The Del Rio Spa is located on the Hotel Savegre grounds, alongside the Savegre River.

With outstanding customer service, this small spa features a welcoming ambiance, amazing professionals, and design features found in only the most refined destinations. The exquisite collection of massages and beauty treatments are designed to pamper your body, soul, and senses.

Rates are extremely competitive with package deals available. You’ll want to be sure to include a stop at the spa in your stay at the Hotel.

In addition to a plethora of independent bird watching and hiking opportunities, there are other activities offered for an extra cost.

Expert resident bird guides are available to accompany guests on bird watching trails for those wishing the extra guidance. This is especially attractive for those hoping to glimpse the Resplendent Quetzal in its natural habitat; they are in the area year round. Other options include a waterfall hike, horseback riding, and trout stream fishing.

With delicious meals, comfortable rooms, excellent guides, great birding, and beautiful scenery, you are sure to thoroughly enjoy your stay and be ready to plan your next visit to Hotel Savegre.
