Right in the middle of Baltimore’s downtown area sits a historic gem of a hotel. The Lord Baltimore Hotel opened in 1928 and has proven to be a survivor. Like many hotels of the 1920s, the Lord Baltimore Hotel went through some tough times, especially in the 1960s. When Rubell Hotels acquired this ornate hotel in 2013, they set about renovating the grand building to its former glory. The results of this top-to-bottom multi-million dollar project are visible immediately upon entering the lobby.

The soaring ceilings with lavish details are highlighted by a gleaming chandelier, cast iron balcony railings, and beautiful artwork. Take note of The French Kitchen fine dining restaurant as you gaze to the right. Up these stairs is some of the best French cuisine in Baltimore, open for breakfast and special events.

Even though the hotel provided a complimentary stay, this is not a sponsored post and the writer’s opinions are his own.

Rooms, suites, and penthouses

Choose from 440 guest rooms and suites—the perfect urban refuge for your stay. The standard rooms have fine linens, plush pillows, armchair, tub/shower combo, fridge, coffee maker, closet, room safe large enough for a laptop, and a bench at the foot of the bed. Although most guests will find the deluxe king room sufficient, the king parlor suite is worth considering if you are a family of four. This luxurious suite has a bedroom, sitting room, pull out sofa, full bathroom, and private seating area. Depending on occupancy, this room is very reasonably priced around 230 USD.

For those wishing to move further up the ladder of luxury, choose one of the Lord Baltimore Hotel’s penthouse suites. Each of these one-of-a-kind suites features unique room plans with a full kitchen, dining room, living room, two full bathrooms, hot tub in the two bedroom suites, and excellent views from the 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd floors. The penthouse suites are popular for guests staying multiple days, breaking the mold of a typical hotel room. With a full kitchen, it’s easy to order groceries from the local Whole Foods to be delivered to your room if you want to prepare your own meals.

Up on the rooftop

LB Skybar

For on-site dining, enjoy breakfast at the stunning French Kitchen, one of Baltimore’s most beautiful restaurants. The French Kitchen is available for special events and open for some holidays for brunch or dinner. The LB Tavern near the lobby offers lunch and dinner daily and surprised my guest and me with a superb meal. I had the crab flatbread with gobs of succulent lump crabmeat, and my guest had a grilled salmon sandwich she raved about. For lighter fare, check out the LB Bakery with house-made cookies, pastries, cupcakes, sandwiches, salads, and La Colombe coffee and Harney & Sons tea. The LB Bakery is open seven days per week 6:30–9 p.m. for grab-and-go or a light meal.

When springtime rolls around, the Lord Baltimore Hotel has one of the best rooftop bars in town, LB Skybar. Unveiled in September 2015 this rooftop refuge has been a hit in a city with few sky-high outdoor drinking and dining options. Open Wednesday through Sunday evenings, find the after-work crowd lounging, sipping, and chatting away on top of one of Baltimore’s coolest hotels. The LB Skybar also opens on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and offers yoga on Saturday mornings, complimentary for hotel guests.

Close to restaurants and bars

With a central location, the Lord Baltimore Hotel puts guests within easy reach of other excellent restaurants and bars. For casual Turkish dining, check out Cazbar at 316 N. Charles St. for lunch or dinner. For old-school fine dining, try either Tio Pepes for Spanish cuisine or The Prime Rib for a stand-alone non-chain restaurant serving up delicious steaks and more. Both these local favorite restaurants are minutes away by Uber or taxi. For several fun drinking establishments within a 10-minute drive or a 15-minute walk, head to Fells Point/Harbor East where places like Loch Bar, Rec Pier Chophouse, Thames Street Oyster House, and more are often packed around happy hour and beyond.

Charm City

If you like classy and historic hotels, I believe you’ll love staying at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in the middle of America’s Charm City.
