One of the lesser-known destinations I enjoyed visiting a lot in Europe, and particularly in the Balkans region, is Ljubljana - the capital city of Slovenia, also known as the Dragon City. Legend has it that Jason and the Argonauts stole the Golden Fleece and slayed a dragon where the city stands today. This dragon symbol of the city, representing strength and courage, can be found on top of the Dragon Bridge and at the castle’s tower on Ljubljana’s coat of arms. In addition, the city also offers plenty of attractions for those who love exploring alternative and artistic districts, old towns and bridges, romantic rivers, medieval castles, and palaces. Here are the top 7 things you must experience in Ljubljana:

1. Explore the city of Metelkova
A highlight of your Slovenia trip will probably be spending lots of time around Metelkova City. If you are wondering, I am not taking you to another city. Known as an autonomous social centre in the north of Ljubljana city center, Metelkova has been occupied since 1993 and was named after the Roman Catholic priest Fran Metelko. Nowadays, it is home to an alternative culture community with plenty of art galleries and studios, LGBT spaces, and cultural organizations. Bustling bars and clubs around the area make it one of the most vibrant nightlife spots of the city. The quirky and intimidating atmosphere of this prior military barrack does make it a top worth-seeing attraction. A must-try experience while staying in Ljubljana is to stay at or visit Hostel Celica, a former prison that has been rated as the No. 1 hippest hostel in the world.
2. Walk along the Ljubljanica River
From Metelkova, head south for about 10 minutes towards the city centre, you will be astonished by how calm the downtown of the Slovenian capital city can be, thanks to the romantic Ljubljanica River. Lying along both river sides are the open market, palace and various cafes and restaurants offering great views and atmosphere.
3. Pass by bridges - the Dragon Bridge and Triple Bridge
Some of the most famous bridges are the Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) and Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). Tromostovje consists of three separate bridges lying nearby each other, and attracts a large number of people crossing this main meeting point. This bridge glows stunningly at night. You can bring your love lock here and leave it on one of the bridges as well.
4. Visit the pink church - Franciscan Church
From the Triple Bridge, you can not miss the eye-catching one and only pink church of Ljubljana - Franciscan Church. Located near Preseren Square, the 16th century baroque church is unique for its signature rose-red color, with a large knave and two rows of side-chapels. I was lucky to come across a choir practicing here when entering.
5. Stroll around the old town
Lying between Castle Hill and Ljubljanica River, the old town, with two squares and the Robba Fountain, is full of small narrow streets filled with antique shops, music and book stores, local clothing shops and traditional restaurants waiting for you to explore. The old town is much smaller than ones in other capital cities like Warsaw or the Czech Republic, but has its own charm thanks to the warm and chilled-out atmosphere. You can walk around the old town alone without worrying about looking like a tourist, and the area is safe during the night.
6. Hike up to the medieval Ljubljana Castle
Built in the 11th century, the castle dominating Ljubljana’s skyline was originally a mighty medieval fortress. To get the best photographs of the castle, stroll around Ljubljana’s old town, stop by Zvezda Park and the famous Triple Bridge. Take a funicular all the way up to Ljubljana Castle to experience plenty of cultural, historic, and entertaining events throughout the year, such as open dancing nights and music shows in the summer. The regular entrance fee is 10 EUR (11.42 USD) including the funicular rides. It’s slightly cheaper to reserve tickets online, or walk to the castle instead of taking the funicular. The 15th of May 2016 is an open day with free admission.
7. Relax at squares and parks
Slovenians are known for being relaxed; you will find that many people commonly lie under the sun or walk their dogs through parks, and stroll across squares and bridges from early in the morning till late afternoon, even during weekdays. The Square of the Republic and Tivoli Park are some of the main places people usually go on a picnic.
How to get around Slovenia and Ljubljana
Getting around Slovenia by train and bus is easy and affordable. Using car-pooling sites, such as Blablacar or Prevoz (inside the country only), is also common. Cities in Slovenia are small with a decent enough infrastructure to get around on foot and bike. Book your trip to Ljubljana and enjoy discovering its many charms.
