Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana are joined by a bridge over the Ouachita River and an interest in combining the best of both towns for the good of all the citizens and visitors. The University of Louisiana-Monroe campus brings in thousands of students every year, and their parents and faithful alumni come into town for athletic competitions, special campus events, and graduations.

Many stay long enough to take in some of the famous museums and attractions. Duck Commander Warehouse got everyone’s attention when a television series called Duck Dynasty was a popular national sensation. The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens allows you to tour the home of Joseph Biedenharn, the original bottler of Coca-Cola, and Nell Calloway and her staff will proudly lead you through the Chennault Aviation & Military Museum. This museum houses a massive number of military artifacts and showcases the contributions of Mrs. Calloway’s grandfather, General Claire Lee Chennault.

Warehouse No.1 Restaurant is a former warehouse turned restaurant situated on the Ouachita River. It serves amazing hushpuppies and delectable Louisiana-style seafood. The fried green tomatoes are a highly recommended choice as an appetizer.

Jac’s Craft Smokehouse in West Monroe will have you drooling from the heady aromas before you ever go inside. The barbecue is great, and when you order the fried pork skins, they will come to your table piping hot.

Shopping in Antique Alley

Shoppers will want to allow several hours to browse the shops along the three-block section of West Monroe known as Antique Alley. In fact, if you have lunch at Jac’s Craft Smokehouse, you’ll be at the beginning of those blocks. Boutiques, collectibles, clothing, home decor, specialty teas, olive oils, jewelry and so much more can be found in all the nooks and crannies of Antique Alley.

A perfect launching point for exploring Monroe-West Monroe

There is a surprising number of things to do and places to dine in Monroe-West Monroe, Louisiana, and TownePlace Suites is a great lodging choice for getting a restful night’s sleep when you’re in town. On a personal note, I want to add how accommodating the staff at this hotel was during a recent visit. My husband and I drove into town when a tornado watch was in effect. It was still an hour or so before check-in time, but we really needed to find a safe place and the hotel manager allowed us to check in early. We were given immediate instructions on where to go and what to do in case the tornado watch became a warning. They went the extra mile to make us comfortable, and we appreciate their kindness.
