Day 1: Afternoon - Stroll along SoCo (South Congress Avenue) and have lunch in one of the hip brunch spots
No trip to Austin would be complete without visiting South Congress Avenue. This vibrant street is lined with restaurants, cafes, and vintage shops. One of the most popular brunch spots is South Congress Cafe where you can enjoy delicious Southern dishes like shrimp and grits or sweet potato beignets. Afterward, stop by Allens Boots and take a look at the extensive range of Western cowboy boots. There are even some made from ostrich if you’re willing to pay a pretty penny. Also be sure to check out Big Top Candy Shop to indulge your inner child and maybe buy yourself some old-fashioned candy. There are also many shopping and art boutiques along the road, such as Yard Dog, or pop into South Congress Books and browse around. For a good photo op, track down some of Austin’s famous murals like the iconic “I love you so much” scrawled across the wall outside Jo’s Coffee. If you’re willing to walk a few blocks, you’ll find the famous “Greetings from Austin” mural at 720 1st St. At the end of all your exploring, be sure to stop at Amy’s Ice Cream for a refreshing treat.
Day 1: Evening - Hike along the shore of Lady Bird Lake and try out some water sports
You might miss Lady Bird Lake at first glance because it really just looks like a river running through downtown Austin! However, thanks to the Longhorn Dam, it’s actually a recreational lake that provides a perfect respite from the hot weather. For those who like hiking or biking, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail makes a complete route around the lake and offers beautiful views. If you want to get out on the water, try your hand at kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. If this strikes your fancy, check out Texas Rowing Center, Congress Avenue Kayaks or Paddle Shack.
