Known as one of the world’s oldest cities, Athens is a timeless destination brimming with culture. Named after the goddess of wisdom, Athena, this temple city thrived as a center for the arts and learning, being home to many of the philosophers we know today, such as Plato and Socrates. From the Temple of Olympian Zeus to the Acropolis, Athens has culture and knowledge in every corner. If you are traveling to the Greek Islands and have to fly to Athens first (which would be the case for most people traveling from the United States), make sure to visit the places on this list even if you're there for only 24 hours. In case you’re wondering, one day in Athens is more than enough to hit up the main sights. Afterward, you can head back to your hotel to enjoy the lavish amenities.
Here are my recommendations:
- The Acropolis: Of course, you do not wanna miss out on this ancient wonder. Otherwise, what’s the point of visiting Athens? Make sure to get there as early as possible to avoid long queues and massive crowds. I highly recommend buying the multi-sight ticket as it would save you money. Also, if you're a student, make sure to bring your student ID for a discount (and yes, your US student ID is acceptable in most places in Europe). Most importantly, wear comfortable shoes!
- Plaka neighborhood: Plaka is a short walk away from the Acropolis. Make sure to check out this beautiful neighborhood.
- Monastiraki Square and Flea Market: This is a unique scene that is cool to explore. Explore the square and the market and enjoy fresh juices that are sold at different corners.
- Areopagitou Street: This is a pedestrian-only street that is not too far from the Acropolis.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus: This is not an absolute must, but if you have time do check it out!
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) hotel ratings, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities.
