One of Cottonwood’s attractions is The Clemenceau Heritage Museum concentrates on the history of the city and other local area towns like Clemenceau, Jerome, and Clarkdale. The museum’s vibrant history includes copper mining, farming, businesses, copper smelters, ranching, local schools, and railroads. Perpetual displays include elaborate working model trains representing the seven railroads that served here from the 1920s to the 1950s, a pioneer ranch kitchen and bedroom, an elementary classroom circa 1950, and copper mines and smelters. Non-permanent displays and exhibits are changed frequently. This is a visit that you and your entire family will enjoy immensely - drop in for your tour.

8. Old Town Center for the Arts

In the 1930s, the Old Town Center for the Arts was constructed from concrete and local river stone. Since opening in 2007, the Old Town Center for the Arts has presented various community events that provide education and awareness of regionally sustainable enterprises. The annual Celebrate the River concert draws together organizations committed to protecting the Verde River Water Basin and the Backyard Gardening Expo provides knowledge about local farming, seed preservation, and gardening. The Water to Wine Festival commemorates local wineries and agriculture enterprises that promote low water use. This elegant and informal theater is dedicated to bringing the best in cultural and community events, entertainment, and arts to the Sedona/Verde Valley area.

9. Arizona Copper Art Museum

Those who enjoyed doing so will have quite the time when touring Arizona Copper Art Museum. Get the chance to learn about how Arizonian mines produce large amounts of copper daily. Visitors will also be able to see several parts of the museum, as well as their featured exhibit: Historical Collection which boasts interesting fun facts, artifacts, and structures from the golden age of American history. Copper Art Museum also presents how copper was used during the war and how it’s still used by the US military to date. 10. Hike Mingus Mountain

With 7,500 feet (2,286 meters) in elevation, this scenic mountain is a must to check off your hiking bucket list when in Cottonwood. 11. Tuzigoot National Monument

Are you curious about the life of Native Americans? Just 6 km (about 4 mi) northwest of Cottonwood, Arizona, lies Tuzigoot National Monument, where one of the largest and best-preserved Sinagua pueblo ruins stands. It dates as far back as 1100 A.D. and sits atop the summit of a limestone and sandstone ridge 120 ft (36 m) above Verde River. The ruin is a 2 to 3 story complex of 110 rooms, the centremost part of which is believed to serve public functions. Guests are highly encouraged to start their tour at Pueblo Revival-style Museum and Visitor Center, where artifacts and informative displays are on exhibit. The path leading to the ruin is impressively well-maintained and easy to walk through. The tour may last from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

12. Jerome State Historic Park

A quick 18 minutes of driving west of Cottonwood will bring you to the town of Jerome, a ‘ghost town’ of 50 to 100 residents where the Jerome State Historic Park is located. One of the most striking details that will catch your attention upon your arrival is the Douglas Mansion, a lone structure atop the Little Daisy Mine. The home, now a museum, was built in 1916 by James Douglas, the sole owner of the largest and most bountiful mine during his time. Now, various historical and informative exhibits are on display in the museum. There is also a picnic area where you can eat and have fun with your family while taking in the panoramic view of the Verde Valley.

13. Gold King Mine Museum and Ghost Town

Have you ever been to a ghost town? If not, then this is your chance to visit Gold King Mine Museum and Ghost Town, a funky stop about 1 mi (1.6 km) north of Jerome featuring dilapidated buildings and other remnants of the mining camp that was a part of the industrial revolution. Once you arrive on the site, you’ll see over 180 vintage cars, trucks, and motorcycles, including Studebakers and Harleys. See up close old mining equipment, historic buildings, and a stamp mill that was used for crushing the ore. Enter the blacksmith shop and watch William Weathersby demonstrate his homestead-style blacksmith skills as he shares stories of the place’s history. You’ll find plenty of photo opportunities, and there’s a petting zoo for the children, too!
