A bustling city that is home to nearly half the population of the state, Aguascalientes has a rich past. While this city is not prominently featured among the sun and surf destinations that Mexico is known for, it is still definitely worth a visit. Meaning ‘hot water’, the city derives its name from the hot springs that are found in the area. 1. Visit Templo de San Antonio de Padua
Set in the historic center of the city, this magnificent structure featuring an eclectic mix of architectural styles was renovated in 2008 to mark its centenary. Soak in the historic ambiance of this splendid building with paintings and sculpted flowers on the elaborate interior of the dome. Constructed by Refugio Reyes Rivas, who did not have any formal training as an architect, this building completed in 1908 dominates the city skyline. Made of yellow limestone, this majestic shrine also features a number of paintings depicting miracles attributed to the patron saint.

2. Stroll amidst serene nature at Jardin de San Marcos
This serene garden dating back to 1847 can be identified by the ornate archway at the entrance. You can find a large variety of plant and tree species in this verdant space. An excellent spot for a walk or a jog and even people-watching, there are plenty of benches around for you to catch your breath. Fountains and iron balustrades make for a pretty picture all around. The garden was renovated and reopened in October 2009 featuring additions such as the statues of ordinary folk who might have once lived in the neighborhood. This is also the site of the famous San Marcos fair. 4. Admire the beautiful architecture of Catedral Basilica De Nuestra Señora De La Asunción
This splendid example of neoclassical architecture towers over the city as it has since 1738. Also known as Aguascalientes Cathedral, this Roman Catholic shrine has an image of the Virgin of Assumption brought from Spain. The ornate interiors and the adorned ceiling with exquisite chandeliers are all worthy of your admiration. The ceiling has three domes which feature gilding and floral motifs. The shrine also features paintings by Miguel Cabrera. Services are held here on a regular basis and this church is a popular choice with many prospective couples for their special day.

5. Browse through the morbid yet fascinating National Museum of Death
Having opened to the public, a little over a decade ago, this fascinating albeit eerie museum started off as a place housing numerous death-related objects and artifacts collected by Octavio Bajonero Gil. Later, the museum was expanded to include the role of iconography related to death in Mexican culture, current and past. The chronological displays start from the pre-Hispanic era and lead right up to current times. From paintings to death masks to sculptures and wood carvings, this museum has plenty for you to browse through. Here, you will get to see the Calaveras, the famous skeletons associated with Mexicana arts. Special exhibits are also hosted here quite often and it is within walking distance of Plaza de la Patria.

6. Enjoy zip-lining at Boca de Tunel
Holding promise of plenty of outdoor fun, Boca de Tunel is a must visit for adventure enthusiasts. Zip lining here is a memorable experience as you pass over ravines to Portrerillos Dam. The park has 13 suspended bridges and you can also opt for a guided tour to the bottom of the dam. Camp near the dam and swim in the natural pools to enhance your experience. Boat rides across the dam are also available here. Located on the outskirts of Aguascalientes, this makes for a perfect day trip.

8. Browse through the impressive collection at José Guadalupe Posada Museum
The city being the birthplace of the famous Mexican graphic artist, it is but natural that there should be a museum housing his works. Here you can see the original signed printed plates that he used to create his works of art. Posada is known for his depictions of the intimate connection between life and death. He started off with illustrations for newspaper stories and lived through the Mexican Revolutionary War. Opened in 1972, the museum is housed in the priest’s residence situated next to a beautiful church. There are also two galleries which feature changing exhibits as well as a display featuring ancient engraving equipment.

9. Have a look inside Palacio de Gobierno
Situated near the Plaza de Patria this is known as the government palace. It is the city’s only standing civil building from the 17th century. The red-colored façade and the numerous arches along with a courtyard and two levels of beautiful murals retain the old world charm of the structure. Two of the prominent murals are by Chilean artist Osvaldo Barra, the protégé of Diego Rivera. This stately building was once the residence of a nobleman and now invites you to soak in its history and heritage.

A shopaholic’s paradise, Altaria Mall is where you should be headed if retail therapy is what you are looking for. 13. Catch a live soccer game at Estadio Victoria stadium
Estadio Victoria has a capacity of over 20,000 and is primarily used for soccer games. Named for a leading brand of beer, it is the home stadium of Club Nexaca. It is also often used for music concerts. Being a small stadium you can get good views of the game from anywhere in the seating area. There are some good hotels nearby and the stadium itself has a nice souvenir shop.

14. Spend some time at Patio de Las Jacarandas
Located at the heart of the city with plenty of shade, this is a good spot to sit and do absolutely nothing! Featuring a metal canopy made of water-jet cut aluminum, this patio has been designed to resemble the jacaranda tree as it appears during the different seasons. A house that resembles a castle, this stately structure is also known as Castillo Ortega. With all the characteristics of a castle from medieval times, this is a popular attraction with visitors to Aguascalientes.
