The Adalaj Stepwell is an ancient well, situated in the quiet village of Adalaj, Gandhinagar district. It was built in the year 1499, by Queen Rudabai, wife of the Vaghela chief, Veersinh. It is a five-storey step-well which was used as a cultural and spiritual refuge. There is an opening in the ceiling which allows light and air to enter the well but direct sunlight doesn’t touch the steps or landing. This stepwell is unique because it has three entrance stairs which meet on the first storey underground, on a huge platform, with an octagonal opening at the top.

The stepwell is made in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture, including its walls, carved with intricate ornamentation and mythological scenes. It attracts hordes of tourists every year and is a famous spot in the Gandhinagar district.
