9. Visit the Litchfield Park Historical Society and Museum

The Litchfield Park Historical Society opened its museum in October of 2012, in the historic site known as “Aunt Mary’s House”, which is a part of the original Rancho La Loma estate, built by Paul Weeks Litchfield. The exhibits relate to the early days of Litchfield Park, with a current archive over 4,000 items, such as logs, photos, letters, records, films and other memorabilia, and more than 175 oral-history interviews. The museum was awarded full affiliation and certification with the Arizona Historical Society, in 2014 and 2015.

11. Have fun at the Winter Trout Fishing Derby

This fun, family event is held annually, in January, in Tierra Verde Lake Park and includes great fishing, with over 1,000 pounds (453.6 kilograms) of trout, stocked in the lake. During the derby, you can have your fill of food, prizes and giveaways and check out the derby participants, who are competing for the most trout caught in divisions for men, women, boys and girls. You must bring along your own fishing equipment and bait, but there is no fishing license required.

13. Explore White Tank Mountain Regional Park

White Tank Mountain Regional Park is located west of Litchfield Park and is named for its natural rock water tanks, once used by local Native Americans. Many unusual petroglyphs and rock carvings are found in this 26,000 acre (10,521.8 hectare) park and it is the largest national park in Maricopa County.

The park is open to the public, 365 days a year, Sunday through Thursday from 6 am to 8 pm, and Friday through Saturday, 6 am to 10 pm. There are many park events, in different months, so do check the website to find out more.

To the south of Litchfield Park is Estrella Mountain Regional Park. It encompasses 19,840 acres (8029 hectares), with an 18-hole golf course, and is equipped with camping, horseback riding, hiking and picnic facilities. Most of the park remains a pristine desert, as it was first discovered by the early settlers and explorers. There is a large wetland area in the park, located near the meeting of the Gaila and Agua Fria Rivers, in the southwest alley.

The Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium is a 215 acre (87 hectare) zoo and aquarium, which specializes in African and South American animals.
