Home to the historic Pinehurst Resort, this village in Moore County has a population of around thirteen thousand people. A large portion of Pinehurst is a National Historic Landmark District, owing to its landscape design and the close relationship it shares with the history of golf in America.

1. Prepare to be enchanted at the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens

Spread over 27 acres (11 hectares), Sandhills Horticultural Gardens features ten major gardens and beautiful natural areas, all of which are maintained by the horticultural students at the Sandhills Community College. Among these is a specialised conifer garden, the Sir Walter Raleigh Garden- a formal garden in the English style - and the Desmond Native Wetland Trail Garden. Sandhills also houses sculptures from local artists and some beautifully maintained areas in which to sit and enjoy nature. Admission is free.

2. Spend a relaxing day at the Cannon Park/Camelot Playground

Cannon Park is a beautiful 15 acre (6 hectare) facility with a playground as well as two baseball/softball fields and a basketball court. Most of the playground lies beneath the shade of mature trees, so the equipment is not too hot during the warm summer months.
There are also covered picnic areas with barbecue facilities and bathrooms.

3. Head over to Rassie Wicker Park

With 3 miles (5 km) of paved walking and biking trails, the Rassie Wicker Park is a 103 acre (41 hectare) area with a splash pad, an outdoor in-line hockey rink, a playground, tennis courts and a soccer field. It is also home to a 33 acre (13 hectare) arboretum.

The Magnolia Lawn, Meadow Lawn and Pergola Garden may all be reserved for weddings, receptions, concerts and other events.

4. Go fishing and boating at the Reservoir Park lake

Another beautiful attraction to enjoy is the Reservoir Park Lake, a 95 acre(38 hectare) lake which offers fishing and boating opportunities to the visitors. A gravel path under a canopy of pine, oak and hickory trees loops around the reservoir.

The park also houses two covered picnic shelters with grills and a number of picnic tables. There is a disc golf facility on-site as well. Additionally, the park makes for the perfect running spot with a flat trail and lots of shade. You can also spot turtles and local wildlife now and then.

5. Check out Tufts Archives

Located in the Given Memorial Library, Tufts Archives tells the rich history of the area through written text, photos and artefacts. The library also houses an eclectic display of golf and Pinehurst memorabilia. The docents are well-informed and friendly. It is especially worth a visit if you love golf and are interested in its history at Pinehurst and in America as well.

6. Experience hospitality at its best at The Village Wine Shop

Featuring wines from around the world, The Village Wine Shop is home to the aptly named Cheers of Pinehurst bar. The atmosphere here is welcoming indeed, as the owner makes it her business to personally welcome everyone who walks in. Frequent wine tasting events are also held here.

7. Gorge yourself on some lip-smacking treats at the Culinary Tours of the Pines

Culinary tasting tours allow guests to sample some of the finest food available in Pinherhust, while learning about the history of the village. There are two tours- The Classic Pinehurst Tour (starting from $55 USD) is an afternoon tour on Tuesdays and Fridays that takes around two and a half hours) and The Sweet and Savory Brunch Tour (starting from $40 USD and running on Thursday mornings until noon).
