7. Visit the lady of the lake at Tignes Dam

The original town of Tignes was used by the government as a reservoir for providing hydroelectric power to the region. The families were moved from their homes in order to flood the town and turn it into a huge reservoir.

Legend has it that there was one woman that refused to evacuate her house and she became the legendary “the lady of the lake.” You can see her as the ethereal statue by the roadside overlooking the reservoir, to commemorate the protest against lives being destroyed.

Every five years, the lake is fully drained and the tops of buildings and winding lanes can be seen in the process.
