Founded as the town of Encino in the 1800s, Uvalde Texas is only a few miles away from the Mexico border. The town’s population is a little under 16,000 people and was home to many successful people including a vice president and an Oscar award winner. Uvalde is a hot place with summers being dry and humid and tends to cool down by the winter months so all this great weather year-round means that Uvalde is a great place to do a little outdoor adventuring. Fort Inge is a piece of history and a top Uvalde tourist attraction. Built in 1849 the fort was meant to protect against Indian raids on US mail carriers going along the route from San Antonio to El Paso. It is now on the register of historic places in Uvalde and a great place for bird watching and observing local nature.

2. Take a look at the ponds seen in Uvalde National Fish Hatchery

5. Hike the trails of Cook's Slough Sanctuary

The old hangar was previously used to store planes when the nearby airfield was being used by the army. The local airfield helped train over 200,000 pilots for the second world war and now is home to to the Hangar 6 Air Cafe. It is open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
