Ranked the fourth most beautiful city in Carolina, the town of Winterville is well-known for sponsoring family-oriented events, for the community. Visitors can participate in their annual Watermelon Festival to join the fun and enjoy their fresh watermelons and classic food on offer, during this time. In Winterville, the farms are long-established and offer a visitor experience, unique to the city. Try a fresh pick of strawberries and other berries, the farm animals are there to keep you company. In addition, you may venture out to the nearby towns - to Neuseway Nature Park, and the birthplace of Pepsi, these places are within one hour’s drive, from Winterville.
1. Watermelon Festival

The Winterville Watermelon Festival is an annual multi-day event offering activities for the whole family. Local and nationally known musical acts will keep you entertained throughout the festival. The Watermelon Parade is the biggest event and shouldn’t be missed. The watermelon-eating contest is also a favourite.

2. Visit a strawberry farm - Strawberries on 903

Visit a strawberry farm and gain some essential agricultural experience, here in Winterville. You may visit the milking parlor, silos, feedlots, egg grading and storage facilities while visiting the farm, and of course, you can purchase their fresh farm produce.
Other than strawberries, the farm is currently cultivating over 25 different varieties of fruit and vegetables, several varieties of cut flowers and plants, as well as all-natural beef, pork and eggs. Their farm produce is also available at their roadside stand, through CSA shares, and at the Pitt County Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and Sundays, during open season.

3. Borck’s Farm

Enjoy the fresh produce at Borck’s Farm and take your pick of berries, like strawberries and blackberries. Donkeys, goats and chickens are there to greet you when you start your journey at the farm. A real Corn Maze is there, for your enjoyment, with the theme of Wild West America. Get yourself lost in the game, but don’t get lost in in the maze!
Brock’s Farm is a third generation, working family farm, who have been living on the land and serving their community, for over eighty years. They can tell you many farm stories, that happened at Winterville. The farm is open to the public from Friday to Sunday.

4. North Carolina-style whole hog BBQ

It’s not enough just to eat your fresh pick from the farm, you ought to have a taste of North Carolina-style whole hog BBQ.
At Sam Jones, the smoked hog is freshly cooked over Carolina oak, daily, from the smokehouse. Chicken, catfish, turkey and burgers are also on the menu and you can truly taste the skills of third-generation pitmaster, Sam Jones, who has dedicated his life to the art of whole hog BBQing. The best part is, you get to bring back their special housemade BBQ sauce, they sell it online as well.

At this 30-year-old seafood restaurant, you will get the Carolinian taste of fresh seafood. At Mayflower Seafood, you can find flounder, whitefish, trout, tilapia, giant shrimps, scallops and more and have them grilled or fried, or make any combination. A reasonably priced fresh catch is hard to find - have a try, you won’t regret it!

7. Neuseway Nature Park
Have you tasted enough of Winterville? Now, it is time to venture out, so take about an hour’s drive to the Neuseway Nature Park, at Kinston, where fun recreational activities wait for you and your family. Located on 55 acres (22.3 hectares), along the Neuse River, Neuseway Nature Park provides recreational activities like camping, hiking, fishing, biking, picnicking and even canoeing, at their Nature Center.
Besides all of this, at their Health and Science Museum, you will find many hands-on exhibits and programs. Its underground tunnels are huge replicas of human blood vessels and there are other replicas of intestines, a stomach and a mouth for visitors. Adults and children will both find these fascinating. In addition, the Planetarium, a large, round 52-seat room with a giant 24-foot (7.3 metre) dome, provides a sky theatre to watch some amazing NASA videos. Don’t forget Big Daddy’s Express, a ride on a miniature replica of a coal mining train, for kids.
Before you take a trip out, check their website to see if there is any closure, due to cyclones, to avoid disappointment.

8. The Pepsi Store
Did you know that the birthplace of Pepsi is just a 30-minute drive from Winterville?
Located in historic New Bern, North Carolina, the Birthplace of Pepsi – the site where Pepsi-Cola was first invented in a pharmacy, in 1898. Here, you can travel back in time to learn about the history of Pepsi, its inventor and the early days of the brand, before it became one of the world’s favourite soft drinks. Enjoy the fountain of Pepsi while you browse and shop for gifts and souvenirs.
The shop is open Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 4 pm.
