The Tailwinds Distilling Company is really worth checking out, even if that means a sip or two of some good craft rum at the start of your vacation. The distilling company is not all about drinking, however, it’s about tasting special kinds of craft spirits and seeing how it’s all made and prepared. The price is 10 USD and includes a 30-minute tour with one of the distillers as well as samples of some of the Tailwinds’ Spirits. The tours are usually on Saturdays and they should be booked in advance.

2. Double Action Dive Charters

Scuba diving is one of those activities everybody should try at least once in their lives. Surprisingly enough, this is an activity that can be done in Illinois on Lake Michigan with Double Action Dive Charters. But Lake Michigan isn’t really about coral or colourful fish. So what is it about? Well, it’s about rusty, old shipwrecks that have been lying on the bottom of the lake for decades (and in some cases centuries). With over 20 known shipwrecks, Double Action has something interesting for people with all levels of diving experience. Beginners can start with the “Wings of the Wind” wreckage - which sunk in 1866 - and more experienced divers can tackle the S.S. Wisconsin. Prices vary from 90 to 200 USD per trip.

Norman Greenway Park is the perfect introduction to some of Plainfield’s beautiful natural surroundings. The park is situated next to a nice creek, so you can go for an interesting walk that includes crossing a couple of wooden bridges. There are a couple of other attractions in the park as well, like a playground, a dog park for our four-legged friends, and in the winter, the park features a hill for sledging. All the park’s paths are paved, so it’s easy to get everywhere with a stroller or a wheelchair.
