The main building of the Lyon County Museum houses artifacts that reveal the culture and history of its people. Some of the exhibits include clothing, housewares, a miniature barbershop, a courthouse, and pictures of the Anaconda Mining Company, which once operated a copper mine in the area. Later, an annex was added where Native American arts and crafts, old gambling equipment, and the artworks of local artists are displayed. A visit to this museum presents an opportunity to learn more about American culture. The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.

2. Valley of Fire State Park

This park earned its name from the bright red sandstone outcroppings. The effect is quite striking as it looks as though fires are burning on the limestone cliffs. The limestones themselves have petroglyphs believed to be 2,000 years old. There are camp grounds and trails that avid hikers will love. 3. Great Basin National Park

The beauty of this park changes with the season. It gracefully runs down from the 13,000-foot (3,962 meter) summit of Wheeler Peak to the moss-covered ground below. During summer, the park is filled with hikers, anglers, and star gazers. Surprisingly enough, temperatures in the park remain comfortably cool during this season. In autumn, the park is colored bright with the leaves of aspen trees. Winter visitors are rewarded with the peace and solitude that one seldom finds in other places. You will have the pleasure of seeing mule deer and skiing becomes the most popular activity. Spring brings an explosion of colors from flowering plants and awakens squirrels and other hibernating animals. Melting snow and streams run down from the hillsides.

4. Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to many rare and endangered animal species. It is located in the north-eastern part of Nevada and is considered one of the most remote wildlife refuge areas in the United States. 5. Fort Churchill State Historic Park

Fort Churchill, established in 1860, was one of the biggest military installations in Nevada. It guarded the emigrants that flocked to California during that time as well as Pony Express and telegraph lines. The fort was abandoned in 1869 but has been preserved as an important part of American history. Today, there are hiking trails that lead to the different parts of the fort. Visitors come to see the ruins and spend time close to nature. There are campsites and picnic areas along the river bank of Carson River, where one can fish or swim in the clear and cool water.

6. Buckland Station

This station was built from materials taken from Fort Churchill after it was abandoned in 1869. The Pony Express used to stop here. Immigrants got their supplies from here and the station also served as the Buckland family boarding house and residence in 1885. Today, the park gives visitors a glimpse of the life that pioneers in the West lived. Picnic areas have barbecue grills and hiking enthusiasts will love the 2.2 mile (3.5 kilometer) nature trail along Carson River, which connects the station to Fort Churchill. Visitors are treated to a short video presentation and a guided tour of the station.

7. Lyon County Courthouse

Construction of The Lyon County Courthouse took place from 1911-1912 after the previous courthouse in Dayton burned down. The structure was made of brick and featured a mixture of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical design. An addition was built in 1935. Today the courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

8. Anaconda Copper Mine

The Anaconda Copper Mine was once the lifeblood of Yerington. The mine operated from 1951 to 1978 and during that time, the pit produced copper ore at a rate of 13,000 tons a day, six days a week. Today all that is left of the mine is a spectacular view of the open pit, with a blue lake at the center. People visiting Yerington often take a detour to the mine, in order to enjoy its grand view of the lake as well as the Mason Valley and the mountains beyond.

Dini’s Lucky Club is the oldest family-owned casino in Nevada. This club has been operating since 1933 and a visit to Yerington is not complete without a stop at this place. Aside from gaming, Dini’s Coffee Shop serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When looking for a place to have a good meal while passing through Yerington, you’re sure to find it at Dini’s.
