Yuncheng is a city in the province of Shanxi in China. This city has a rich cultural heritage and this is reflective in the architecture of some buildings around the city. 1. Yongle Palace


The Yongle Palace is probably one of the most visited spots in Yuncheng. Located in Ruicheng County, Shanxi Province, the Yongle Palace is known to be one of the most famous Taoist temples in China, having been constructed back in 1247. The main halls of the palace grounds were built in 1262 but the most famous part of the palace known as the Chunyang Hall was only completed in 1358. The Yongle Palace covers a wide area and the main places in the palace include the Palace Gate, the Longhu Hall, the Sanqing Hall and the Chongyang Hall.

The architecture of the Yongle Palace will amaze you as you stare in awe at the intricacies. For aficionados of Chinese art, there are several murals in the palace to capture your hearts. There are many different, beautiful, impressive artworks around the interiors of the palace. The most famous mural is the Chaoyuantu. This is a painting which features a group of deities paying their respects to Primordial Supreme Lord. These murals are not only artistic in nature, they also speak volumes of the history of Taoism and the way the Yuan dynasty worked.

The Sanmenxia Guoguo Museum is also known as the Guo State Museum and is a huge, modernistic building. The museum is a good way to help tourists learn more about the area in Henan Province. This prime sightseeing venue is divided into 4 sections - one depicting China’s history and culture, interesting and antique relics, the army, and King Guoji’s tomb site. The burial site and burial chariot are on display at the museum and treasure which was discovered from the site is also said to be on show. The museum essentially covers two periods of China - the Western Zhou Dynasty and the spring and autumn periods. If you are interested in learning more about the history of China and are in Yuncheng, then do not fail to visit the Guo State Museum.

3. Offer a prayer at Guan Di Temple


The Guan Di Temple is one of the most commonly visited temples in Yuncheng. It is an impressive religious building which has a historic feel. Spanned over a large area, the buildings go way back in time and contain very colorful murals. One will also notice that there are many ancient statues. The temple is dedicated to Guan Yu, the God of War and can be regarded as a military temple. The main part of the Guan Di Temple is located in the northern area and resembles a palace. The main temple to Guan Yu is known as the Chongning Hall. The gardens are very well kept and very beautiful. You will be able to find guides around the premises although it is said that they mainly speak Putonghua.

4. China's Dead Sea


This is an incredible salt lake in Yuncheng which is known for its changing colors. This happens as the temperature of the lake rises, especially in summer and in spring. Owing to this, the salt lake has now become a tourist attraction and attracts throngs of people. The lake is said to be at least 500 million years old and covers an area of about 120 square km (46 square miles). The lake changes colour and it is most commonly red. This is due to the microorganisms, Dunaliella salina. This is a micro algae which commonly appears in salt lakes in countries around the world like America and France. This palette of colors is highly attractive and worthy of some very good photographs.

5. Phoenix Ancient Town

Situated in the southeastern Zhashui county of Shaanxi province, the Phoenix Ancient Town Scenic Spot is located towards the middle of the Shechuan River. This town is otherwise called Fengguangguchen. This area was built during the High Tang Period and flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The town boasts of its natural beauty with the surrounding mountains, blue skies and clear water. These mountains are covered with green foliage and the architecture of the houses there are reflective of the diverse Chinese communities which lived in the area during the various dynasties. An iconic feature of the ancient town is the bridges that are built over-water and the unique houses built on stilts. These images are often portrayed in Chinese paintings. Visit this scenic spot to see how the various inhabitants lived over the course of time and get a glimpse of their lifestyle.

6. Swan Lake Wetland Park


This is one beautiful place where you should bring your camera along. It is located in Sanmenxia and is a national wetland resort that has been built along the Yellow River. This park is extremely beautiful when flocks of migrant swans travel past this lake every winter. The park is also rich in ecological resources and always has a pleasant environment. One can spot different varieties of plants and birds throughout the park. This creates a very chirpy environment and is sometimes colorful as well. Apart from other flora and fauna which beautify the park, is peony fields which transform the park into something entirely enchanting.
