Townsend is a small city with less than 1000 permanent residents on the doorstep of the rich and diverse Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The city is often referred to as being on the “quieter side of the Smokies”. Hike to Alum Cave Trail, swim at Grotto Falls, and enjoy panoramic views from the top of Mount Le Conte. Drive around Cades Cove valley to enjoy natural scenery and wildlife such as black bears, wild turkeys, and elk. Visit Little River Railroad Museum to gain insight into the history of the area. It is easy to plan a trip to explore Great Smoky Mountains, but when the time comes to pick a place to stay, you will have a hard time deciding from the most picturesque cabins. Great eateries in Townsend:
Peaceful Side Social: With craft beer and farm-to-table dishes, Peaceful Side Social entices visitors with a unique dining experience. I’d love to try out Appalachian Trail Board with salami, pepperoni, regional cheese, pickled veggies, and more, and their Cajun shrimp and Conecuh sausage sounds delicious as well.
Dancing Bear Lodge Bistro: The dishes here are steeped in Appalachian traditions and take the culinary experience up a notch by using fresh produce grown on site and high-quality locally grown ingredients. According to Southern Living, the lodge’s Dancing Bean Coffee House is also a great place to dine.
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) host status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and access to hot tub. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on January 30, 2025.

1. Bear Haven Cabin (from USD 315)
Best for: Lovebirds
This secluded cabin rental in the woods is a great escape for a romantic getaway near the Smokies. While the cabin is cozy for two, the semi-fenced property grounds are quite vast. Surrounded by unspoiled woodland, guests are in the midst of nature. The front deck is fitted with a hot tub, which overlooks the woods and the gazebo on-site. The deck is an excellent place to enjoy your morning coffee in rocking chairs and sunset cocktails in the hot tub.
Guests enter the house directly into the living room, which later separates into a kitchenette and dining area. The kitchen door leads to the back deck with chairs, just opposite which is a covered barbecue area. I’d love to try out some local barbecue at this cabin!

5. Elk Lodge (from USD 1636)
Best for: Get-togethers and school trips
Part of Tuckaleechee Retreat Center, this split-level lodge is one of the seven offered on the property. Each of the individual properties comes with kitchens, barbecue grills, gas fireplaces, and indoor hot tubs. The outdoor hot tub at this luxury cabin is adjacent to the community swimming pool and comes surrounded by an extensive deck space. Decks overlooking the pool space run the entire length of the lodge on both levels, and to me, these seem like great spots to hang out with the entire group. Additionally, bedrooms three and four feature an indoor hot tub in the en suite bathroom.
While the outdoor pool is only operational between May and September, the shared outdoor hot tub is open year-round.
