Caernarfon is a charming port town in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. Famous for its large and majestic castle, the town is a great base for exploring other places along North Wales’ coastline as well as inland towards the beautifully scenic Snowdonia National Park and the soaring Mount Snowdon.

Caer Menai is situated in the heart of the town, within reach of all local attractions as well as a good selection of places to eat, drink, and shop. A welcoming and friendly bed and breakfast accommodation, it’s a great place to relax after your days of explorations.

Choice of rooms at reasonable prices

There are seven rooms in total at Caer Menai. Each room is individually furnished and decorated, with an en suite bathroom and central heating.

Double rooms cost between 63 and 74 GBP (approximately 90.50 to 106 USD) per night, when occupied by two people. It is also possible for solo travellers to book a double room, and the price is reduced to 48 GBP (approximately 69 USD) for single occupancy. Twin rooms (with two single beds) are available for 70 GBP (approximately 100.50 USD) per night. There is also a family room that can sleep up to two adults and one child. The family room costs 85 GBP (approximately 122 USD) per night.

Rooms are spread across three floors in the historic townhouse. There is no elevator.

Interestingly, the building of Caer Menai is not only a lovely bed and breakfast accommodation; it also stands on the site of the first county school, which dated back to 1894.

Comfortable rooms for a great night’s sleep

Beds are comfortable with soft pillows, crisp sheets, and warm duvets. Towels are also provided.

I stayed in the smaller double room. In addition to the double bed, the room has a wardrobe, a luggage rack, a large mirror, and a colour television. On top of the bedside tables you’ll find a lamp, a box of tissues, and an alarm clock – perfect for making sure that you don’t oversleep in the cosy bed! A small refrigerator adds greater convenience.

Bathrooms have a shower over a bathtub, giving you the choice of how to bathe. Refresh under the warm jets of water or luxuriate in the tub – the choice is yours! You can make use of the free selection of mini toiletries, and you’ll also find other useful amenities such as cotton wool pads. A hairdryer in the room means there’s no need to start the day with wet hair!

Relax with a free hot drink

In your room you’ll find a kettle along with a good selection of sachets for making hot drinks. Whether you fancy a steaming hot cup of coffee, a fruit tea, or a cup of hot chocolate, the varied choice means that you can chill out with whatever you fancy. You’ll find complimentary drinking water and fresh milk in the refrigerator. If you’re feeling peckish, or just want something sweet to go with your drink, packets of mini biscuits are also provided.

Unwind in the communal living room

There’s no need to spend the evening in your room if you don’t want to – simply head downstairs to the ground floor and make yourself at home in the communal living room. Spacious and inviting, it’s a place for all guests to use as they like. Soft sofas with large cushions beckon, or maybe you’d prefer to sink into an armchair. There’s a large television, in addition to a book collection and diverse board games.

Vases of colourful fresh flowers sit on the coffee table, shelves, and windowsill, adding a pleasant fragrance to the air.

Step into the hallway and you’ll find even more flowers, adding a homely touch, as well as a good selection of information leaflets of things to do in the surrounding areas.

Tuck into a hearty breakfast

Room rates include breakfast each morning. The breakfast room is to the same well-decorated and nicely-furnished standard as the rest of the property. Placemats made from traditional Welsh slate sit on top of the wooden tables, and flowers adorn the mantelpiece.

Help yourself to cereals, juice, and fresh fruit whilst waiting for your individual breakfast to be prepared. The breakfast menu offers a good choice, and whether you want a filling feed or a lighter bite, you won’t be disappointed. Start your day with a full English breakfast, including sausage, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, and toast, or sink your teeth into a salmon bagel. Enjoy a vegetarian breakfast, with veggie sausages, toast, eggs, mushrooms, hash browns, and tomatoes, or indulge in eggs on toast, a bacon sandwich, or one of the other breakfast items available. Tea and coffee are available.

If you need to make an early start to the day, let the owners know and they will provide you with breakfast items, such as bread, cheese, yoghurt, cereal, and fruit, to keep in your room, ready to enjoy the following morning.

Other useful information for staying at Caer Menai

Caer Menai is just a few steps from the entrance to Caernarfon Castle; it will take less than two minutes from the bed and breakfast to the ticket counter for the castle. The port and castle square are also just a short walk away from the property.

The friendly owners, Karen and Mark, are happy to assist with local knowledge and recommendations.

Whilst the property does not have a car park, you can find roadside parking spots close by. There are also nearby public car parks that do not charge for overnight parking, as well as a handful of pay-and-display car parks.

Book your stay at Caer Menai to enjoy the charms of Caernarfon from a comfortable and friendly bed and breakfast.
