Westwood began as a mere residential neighbourhood and soon picked up popularity, leading to become one of the most bustling (semi-commercial) neighbourhoods one could find in Los Angeles. Its pedestrian-friendly streets are lined with stores ranging from high-end designer boutiques to fast fashion outlets, historic movie theatres, and some of the most high-end gourmet restaurants and top-class cafes. In fact, Westwood is where you’d find the campus of one of USA’s (and probably the world’s) most sought-after educational institutes, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While you may be able to enjoy Westwood’s college charm, be conscious of Beverly Hills’s upscale vibe too. And, if the exploration is getting too much, stop by and relax. Here are some of the best cafes you must try in Westwood, Los Angeles, California.

1. Upside Down
Happy Friday! Remember to come in early since we close at 1pm for Shabbat. How will you be resting for the Sabbath?
Posted by Upside Down on Friday, 16 August 2019
Upside Down combines the best of community, local art, snacks, and beverages, all under one roof. It is probably one of the newest entrants to Westwood’s cafe scene and encourages the works of local and emerging artists in the many artworks that you’d find strewn across the cafe’s space. You can walk around and admire this art or just sit back and enjoy yourself a chill time. Trying coffee is a must here, but so are the tea drinks! Upside Down also hosts art workshops and exhibitions periodically.

2. Nuka Cafe
Nuka Cafe is now open! The address is below. 1510 Westwood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA Come on by! / #nukacafe
Posted by Nuka Cafe on Tuesday, 23 July 2019
Also new on the cafe scene in Westwood is the Mediterranean-Turkish treats-inspired Nuka Cafe, where usual coffee and tea are of course amazing, but so are the bites. Pair the yum walnut or pistachio baklava with a hot cuppa Turkish coffee – oooh! Plus, other, large bites are fantastic too – pide and lahmajun (types of flatbreads), kebabs, and stuffed grape leaves. As for the cafe’s ambience, it is bright and sophisticated.

Opening hours: Mon - Sat: 11am - 9pm (closed on Sun)
3. Brewin’ Coffee
Brewin’ Coffee’s outlet has dropped on Westwood Boulevard so recently that they’ve not even put up a formal signage or made their website live yet! Although rest assured, the place serves a bangin’ cuppa joe that you can sit back and enjoy at the cafe itself or take one on the go and continue your sojourn of Westwood. The place sees its regulars in UCLA students, studying and doing their work. Not all that crowded, but great service. Overall, double thumbs up for Brewin’ Coffee.

Best of both worlds. #coffee + #frenchtoast

Fast-casual cafe and dead serious about its flavours, Comoncy does it lattes just as well as it does its lunches. Right from their loaded Beverly Hills club sandwich to the Organic Skuna Bay Salmon plate, vanilla latte made of vanilla syrup made from scratch or one of the flavoursome organic teas (available in several different flavours), everything at Comoncy satisfies.

Quite unlike many other Westwood cafes, Le Pain Quotidien boasts a large outdoor patio seating area to soak in the best of the neighbourhood’s vibe while sipping on some joe and snacking on some grub. While the cafe has a wide range of Parisian classics (croissants to gruyere omelette), there’s a selection of Southern Californian favourites as well. Do try their organic pastries – delish!

Solid spread. #brunch #marynrobbs #foodies PC: @gulfemgenc
Posted by Mary & Robbs Westwood Cafe on Saturday, 25 April 2015
While Mary and Robbs Westwood Cafe calls itself a ‘cafe’, it leans more towards a full-blown restaurant. Ample seating, diner counter, excellent service, and lots of options – what else would you rather think it would be? Their classic scrambled eggs and eggs Benedict are just as yum as the wholesome cajun filet mignon or the spinach melt with mushrooms. Plus, not just the usual coffee and tea, you can even go in for a wine or beer to go with your food here.

Bringing the best of Ethiopian, Honduran, Columbian, and Coast Rican flavours in their coffee along with the usual blends, Ministry of Coffee takes its coffee seriously and even the grub. Plus, some Turkish-inspired treats as well. The lamb merguez sausage, za’atar-roasted chicken salad sandwich, egg sandwiches, and Vegemite toast are a few of the many things you have got to try here with the flat whites, which will give you the kick of a mule.

8. Espresso Profeta
Posted by Espresso Profeta on Monday, 21 May 2018
Espresso Profeta is one place where coffee connoisseurs will love it. It is housed in an elegant red-brick building, with ample patio seating and fresh ambience, complete with works of local artists displayed across. Try their orange zest and cinnamon-topped Caffe Nico or the white mocha, White Velvet and you’ll know just what we meant with the caffeine kick bit. While the traditional Americanos, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and lattes are well worth the try, so are the quality Lupicia teas, so do try. Although Espresso Profeta doesn’t really do food, they offer a selection of pastries by Buttercake Bakery and sandwiches (assembled in-house) by Breadbar breads.

The bar at Kerckhoff Coffee House at UCLA. The copper-backed saloon doors are still there! Sadly, the 31 Flavors side is...
Posted by Joe Angel Martinez Morin on Friday, 18 May 2018
Housed within UCLA’s central campus, Kerckhoff Coffee House is a popular haunt among the university’s students as well as the faculty. No matter when you head there, you’ll spot students sitting with wads of papers and piles of books, studying/working. While the coffee here is pretty good, it is the atmosphere that’s the real calling. Monday evenings are live music evenings, so try making it for that.

Doused in an aroma of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked breads, cakes, and pastries, Elysee Bakery and Cafe has been going strong since 1979. Their loaded sandwiches or the buttery croissants, coupled with rich and frothy coffees, are every bit a fantastic combo you ought to try. Also, the fruit tarts, chocolate cheesecake, and one of the frozen coffee drinks – yum, yum, and more yum!
Insider’s info: If you happen to drop by close to the cafe’s closing time, you might even be treated to a few complimentary pastries! Remember to be the ideal customers and you might just get lucky! YAY!
