Just like the Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery is also a well-loved tourist attraction in Lisbon. It is a religious building that was designed to memorialize the return of Vasco da Gama from India. It is built on the site of the former Ermida do Restelo Chapel where Vasco da Gama and the rest of the sailors prayed before setting sail down the African coast to India. It is a lovely building that features Gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside, you will find Vasco da Gama’s tomb.

Jerónimos Monastery
Jerónimos Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an example of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. Its construction started in 1501 and was completed a century later. King Manuel I occupied the monastery with monks whose sole role was to pray for the King’s eternal soul. It also served as a spiritual source for the navigators and sailors departing from the nearby ports to discover lands around the world. You'll notice ropes and other maritime elements incorporated in this richly ornate architecture. This is a characteristic of the Manueline style.
