The large Thai province of Ubon Ratchathani can be found over in the far east of the country, sharing borders with Laos and Cambodia. It is in the part of Thailand that is often referred to as Isan. The province is home to an abundance of interesting things to see and do, with spectacular natural attractions, fascinating historical sites, and bags of Isan culture. The lovely Sai Kaew Resort offers a terrific base from where to enjoy many of the province’s highlights.

Enjoying a great location almost right outside one of Ubon Ratchathani’s most popular national parks (Pha Taem National Park), Sai Kaew Resort offers the utmost comfort for very reasonable prices.

Different rooms types to suit varying budget expectations

Even the most expensive room type at Sai Kaew Resort is very affordable! There are basic rooms in a one-level concrete block for 500 THB (approximately 14 USD) per night or those offering a little more luxury and character in traditional Thai wooden houses for 700 THB (approximately 20 USD) per night. It is well-worth splashing out a bit more and opting for the more expensive room type.

Room features and facilities

Whilst the cheaper rooms have cold water showers and an electric fan, those in the wooden houses have hot water and air conditioning.

Some of the wooden houses are actually split into two independent en suite rooms, each with its own private doorway from an open-fronted communal central terrace. The two rooms in each house building share a refrigerator, located on the covered terrace.

Beautiful wooden furnishings make you feel immediately comfortable when you enter the cosy wood-panelled room, and the luxuriously thick duvet will make you want to crank the air conditioning right up and snuggle! Rooms have a TV and a desk. The only possible minus point is that there is no door between the bedroom and the bathroom – privacy is provided by way of a plastic curtain.

Parking is available right outside each room.

Onsite dining for total convenience

also perfect for grabbing an early breakfast before heading out for your day’s adventures and explorations.

The open-sided restaurant has ample seating, and it serves a typical menu of Thai favourites. Sink your teeth into Pad Gra Pao, spicy stir fried holy basil with pork, chicken, or beef and served with rice, or mixed vegetables over rice (Pad Pak Rad Khao), or slurp on a bowl of steaming hot and spicy soup such as Tom Yam.

You can buy a selection of drinks and snacks from the restaurant / reception area, and there is a member of staff on reception duty all around the clock – perfect for late arrivals!

A fantastic location for explorers

Sai Kaew Resort is located less than a five minute drive from the main entrance of Pha Taem National Park. Within the park you can enjoy magnificent views, see a yawning crack where the earth was crudely ripped apart by seismic activity, marvel at unusual rock formations, and be in awe at ancient rock paintings that have managed to survive the years. Admission to the park costs 400 THB (approximately 11 USD) for non-Thai citizens.

With your own transport, it is easy to visit some of the province’s other delights such as the incredible Sam Phan Bok, marketed as the Grand Canyon of Thailand, the temples and museums of the provincial capital, also called Ubon Ratchathani, and Chong Mek border crossing between Thailand and Laos. Mae Nam Song Si, the two-coloured river, is also well-worth a visit. It is where the different coloured water of the mighty Mekong River meets that of the Mun River.

More tempting reasons to stay at Sai Kaew Resort

The owner is very friendly and helpful, happy to answer a multitude of questions about local attractions and directions. Little English is spoken, however, so you would need at least a basic level of Thai in order to benefit from his pearls of wisdom.

If you wake up early, you can watch the first sunrise in all of Thailand! The eastern location also means that it is that last place in the country to see sunset.

Book your stay at Sai Kaew Resort and have fun exploring the awesome, yet terribly under-rated, Ubon Ratchathani.
