Maryland’s Eastern Shore is a hot spot for day trips and long weekend visits. St. Michaels is probably the most visited town due to its charm, waterfront location, and history. Several lodging choices are available for those looking to spend the night in St. Michaels. The Five Gables Inn and Spa ticks all the boxes when you are ready to book a room.

A room or suite for your stay

Five Gables Inn and Spa

The Five Gables Inn and Spa is made up of three 19th century homes on North Talbot Street (the main drag). This location puts you on the quieter end of North Talbot Street, yet still in easy walking distance to all the historic town center has to offer. Rates for king and queen rooms are reasonable, even in the busy April to October season. A mid-week room will cost around 195 USD and includes a better than usual continental breakfast. All rooms have seasonal fireplaces, whirlpool bathtubs, plus include use of the indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and bicycles.

The king and queen rooms all have their own attached bathrooms, shower, cable TV, VCR & CD players, and some have private balconies. Book early if you want one of the balcony rooms so you can sip your favorite beverage and watch the North Talbot Street action. Some king rooms have a seasonal fireplace if you come in the off-season when warm days turn into cool nights. Although the queen and king rooms have plenty of space to stretch out, you might want even more room.

The Five Gables Inn and Spa has several unique suites to choose from. A bigger bathroom with double sized whirlpool tubs, multi-headed shower jets, plush king bed, and seasonal fireplace are all yours. If you would like to bring your dog, you will be pleased to know St. Michaels is one of Maryland’s best pet-friendly towns. The Five Gables Inn and Spa will allow up to two dogs in their specific, pet friendly rooms. The one-time fee of 50 USD for the first pet and 25 USD for the second is reasonable, plus dogs receive a comfy bed, special treats, and a toy to take home.

Spa choices and package deals

If a spa treatment is desired, they have an Aveda Concept Spa onsite. Open daily, it’s best to book ahead to get the treatment and time slot you have in mind. A one hour massage is only 100 USD or choose a couples massage for 200 USD. In the off season when those chilly Chesapeake winds blow cold, a hot stone massage is true luxury! Other treatments like the Rosemary Mint Awakening Body Wrap will relax and rejuvenate you before or after walking the town.

Check out their website for special event facilities if you are looking for a place to host a meeting, wedding, or party. Also on their website, find package specials like the Spa & Sail Package that includes a one hour massage each and a 65 minute boat ride. Another attractive package is the Ladies That Wine Package, available April 27 through October 31. Indulge in spa treatments and wine tasting with this two night package for two guests.

Around town

Ava's Wine Bar and Restaurant

With such a historic and welcoming town at your feet, you will have plenty to see and do. St. Michaels is one of the most pedestrian and bicycle-friendly towns in Maryland. Most visitors will be able to see what they want by walking. However, if you want to take a bike ride, St. Michaels has quiet streets that are safe to ride for the whole family. The best part is the Five Gables Inn and Spa has several bikes you can use for free. The front desk is happy to suggest a route to see the sights and recommend a restaurant stop along the way.

Speaking of restaurants, you will find some of Maryland’s best dining choices in St. Michaels. For a casual lunch or dinner, consider Ava’s Wine Bar where pizza, wine, and beer attract locals and visitors alike. For waterfront seafood restaurants, either the Crab Claw or St. Michaels Crab and Steak House would be good choices. For fine dining, right next door to your lodging find 208 Talbot for steaks, rack of lamb, or stuffed lobster. At Limoncello, indulge in authentic Italian dining and an expansive Italian wine list. If you want to dine with your dog, Gina’s Café is a good place to eat outdoors or St. Michaels Steak and Crab House where dog biscuits are offered free to four legged companions on their deck.

St. Michaels also has excellent shopping on the main drag. For adult beverages, find a winery, distillery, and coming soon, St. Michaels Brewing Company for beer lovers. To get an idea of what the past was like on the Chesapeake Bay, be sure and visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Here you will see the importance of oysters and crabbing to the area’s livelihood. Other museums include the St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square, and the Classic Motor Museum opened recently with its collection of very old or very cool cars.

Under the spell

At the end of each eventful day by the bay you will return to a charming and comfortable room. Once you have fallen under the spell of St. Michaels, it’s likely you will return to the Five Gables Inn and Spa for another helping of Eastern Shore comfort.
