If you want to visit a restaurant with a significant amount of hustle and bustle and waiters rushing around from one table to another, then Bob Bob Ricard is not the place for you. If you are watching prices, head somewhere else please; Bob Bob Ricard is the type of place to indulge and for that you must fully participate in enjoying the experience to the absolute maximum.
Based at 1 Upper James Street in London, Bob Bob Ricard is an extravagant Russian and British restaurant, which exudes luxury and opulence from the entrance to the restrooms and the ceiling to the floor. It is one of the most glamorous places to enjoy a lunch or a dinner in London and certainly a place where you can have a once in a life-time experience.
Stylish and smart exterior with an element of mysteryWithin the busy city of London, Bob Bob Ricard is a calm oasis where you can sit back, relax and certainly enjoy yourself. It is decadent, slightly quirky and overall, quite frankly outrageous in the best of ways. However, this is not something that you would be able to tell from the outside as the highly placed booths from the inside prevent passers by peeking in to see what Bob Bob Ricard is like inside, so you really do have to make a reservation.
The restaurant is made up of two floors; a ground floor and a basement for which the décor in both is most unique and glitzy. The colour scheme of the ground floor is blue, whereas in the basement it is red. Guests do not have a preference as to which seating area they are allocated and it should be noted that the basement is only open for the dinner service. The décor itself throughout the entire establishment is very much an attraction; there is an old Hollywood glam throughout.
Exclusive booths for your privacyFrom the moment that you enter, you will get this warm feeling and will unsurprisingly be welcomed by a hospitable maitre d’ who will show you to your seat. Whilst you walk from the entrance to your seat, I guarantee that your eyes won’t know where to look because of the beauty and glamour that you’re surrounded by at every single corner. The seating area in the majority of the restaurant consists of booths with little velvet drapes pulled across to shield and segregate the areas so that diners can have more privacy. With marble topped tables and the finest tableware, you know from the onset that you will be having an exceptional experience at Bob Bob Ricard.
Gorgeous bar with golden table numbers lighting up above itOn the ground floor, any diners that have their seating areas facing the bar will be wowed throughout their lunch or dinner because there will be gold numbers being lit up above the bar. Now, can you guess what these represent? Well, Bob Bob Ricard is all about delivering a unique experience, an experience that cannot be provided anywhere else, and it certainly does this through one specific way, which is its “press for champagne” button. Above the bar, whenever a gold number lights up, it means that that specific table has pressed the champagne button and is awaiting champagne.
Uncontrollable excitement in pressing the champagne buttonWith the difficulties in obtaining a reservation at Bob Bob Ricard, I had waited so long to enjoy this incredible establishment and am compelled to tell you about the “press for champagne” button that absolutely everyone wants to know about when they hear the name, “Bob Bob Ricard”. Well, once you’re seated in your booth, you will note on either your right or left-hand side that there is an outlet (for you to charge your phone, as you will have to take pictures of this experience) and most importantly, the all-talked-about, “press for champagne” button. As you can see from the photograph above, I was more than inclined to press the button, even before my main meal had arrived.
Ice-cold champagne within secondsThe button itself is quite deep, so you really do have to press it properly and well, I think it needs a ladies touch to make sure that it lights up, so to all you gentlemen, please do take note. The button itself will light up when pressed correctly and so will the table number above the bar. Within a few moments, a very sharply suited waiter will arrive to your table and will enquire which type of champagne you would like to order. The choices are as follows: Ayala Brut Majeur for 13.95 GBP (17 USD), Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut for 13.95 GBP (17 USD), Ayala Rose Majeur for 16.95 GBP (21 USD) or Ayala Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru for 20.50 GBP (25 USD) per glass. Once you have placed your order, within a few seconds, you will receive ice-cold champagne in the most beautiful crystal cut Russian glasses, which is absolutely fabulous and tastes exquisite.
Extensive and international drinks menuIt is not only the champagne that is exceptional at Bob Bob Ricard but so much more including the other drinks listed in its extensive drinks menu. I devoured the Akashi-Tai Shiraume Umeshu (which is a luxurious plum liqueur) which, whilst not very Russian or British, was absolutely wonderful and brilliantly priced for 8.50 GBP (10 USD) per glass. Following through with the not very British or Russian theme is the Vin de Constance, Klein Constantia Estate, which is Africa’s greatest wine and is famous because Napoleon Bonaparte used to have it shipped to St. Helena to ease his exile. A glass at Bob Bob Ricard is 13.50 GBP (17 USD). In addition, being the rather glitzy place that it is, Bob Bob Ricard has the world’s most famous and highly prized sweet wine in stock: the Chateau d'Yquem Cru Superieur Sauternes, Bordeaux, which is 29.50 GBP (36 USD) per glass.
A rare experience of Russian extravaganceBeing surrounded by such a superb ambiance, one must embrace the opulence that is Bob Bob Ricard and have at least one, two or three drinks so that they can truly transcend into a world of the wealthy, even if it’s only for one dining experience. No doubt that one of those drinks will have to be champagne. The staff are so ultra polite and attentive, you will certainly feel like the most important guest in the dining area. This top-notch service combined with the unusual art deco and Russian extravagance is a rare experience, so please do consider making your reservation as I can guarantee that it is worth it. I am sure you’re tempted to press the champagne button too, even if just a little bit?
Actual choices for vegetariansSometimes, I find myself visiting high-end restaurants and finding that the vegetarian has only been regretfully considered once on the menu. However, this is not the style of Bob Bob Ricard; it likes vegetarians and it gives us choices, so don’t you worry my fellow dietary group companions, there is hope for us. On the food menu there was at least three items for the vegetarian to select. I chose the Pearl Barley Risotto, which was made with pearl barley, courgette, parmesan, basil, lemon and fresh truffle and cost 24.50 GBP (30 USD). However, it was after some serious deliberation that I picked it as I was rather keen on the Sauternes & Truffle Humble Pie, which was valued at 18.50 GBP (23 USD). Throughout your meal, you will note the exceptional table service that is five-star quality. The folding of napkins and the removal of the salt and pepper shakers after the main course just added that extra special touch of a fine dining experience. Bob Bob Ricard also celebrates birthdays with guests, so if it is your special day, be prepared to receive a beautiful glittery, pink cheesecake with a sparkly candle to wish you happy birthday.
What is there not to love about Bob Bob Ricard?
The best way to describe Bob Bob Ricard is as a theatrical dining experience, for which there are points where you may even feel that you’re a James Bond girl experiencing a surreal new lifestyle. So if you fancy some action, a bit of mystery and glitz, then you know where you have to go. I am sure that you wouldn’t be surprised that I would recommend Bob Bob Ricard as one of the best places to dine and have a five-star-experience.
