Renowned for its barbecues, briskets Tex-Mex cuisine, and its burgeoning bar scene, Austin isn’t really associated with healthy eating or gluten-free food. Gluten is a combination of proteins found in wheat, rye, barley etc. Finding gluten-free food is not easy. However, you’d be surprised to know that a number of gluten-free joints have popped up over the city, so you gluten-intolerant (or just plain healthy) folks can rejoice! Don’t worry about portion size - it’s true that everything is bigger in Texas, and the capital city of America’s largest state sure knows that better than most. Here is a list of 10 gluten-free restaurants in Austin, Texas to keep your bellies full and waistlines slim.
1. Wilder Wood Restaurant and Bar
The locally-known gluten-free cafe, Wild Wood Bakehouse, shut its doors earlier this year. Longtime fans didn’t have to mourn for long, however, as they opened another outlet in east Austin, this time with a more mature and sophisticated vibe (there are two in-house bars), although with the same focus on providing delicious and healthy 100% gluten-free Mexican-American food. The menu is also more extensive, although their famous baked goods and onion rings are still available.

2. Thai Fresh
This is how we do Pad Thai around here. Beautiful and delicious.
Posted by Thai Fresh on Thursday, 3 January 2019
Thai Fresh prides itself on its fresh, locally-produced, farm-raised meats and vegetables. And it shows in the quality of its authentic Thai cuisine, which is extremely flavorful and (unsurprisingly) spicy. Try their Pad Thai, or fried chicken sandwich (voted the best-fried chicken sandwich in Austin!), and then top your meal off with their wonderfully yummy selection of coconut milk-based ice cream (the ice cream is mostly vegan!). If you have a sweet tooth, you can check out their bakery as well - the baked goods are gluten-free and vegan. Most items on the menu are gluten-free unless otherwise stated.

Who doesn’t love pizza? Now gluten-intolerant people can have a taste of Via 313’s deliciously greasy pizza as well. Via 313 aims to bring authentic Detroit-style pizza - square-shaped and prepared topping-first - to the heart of Austin (The chain has five outlets across the city). Detroit-style pizza, while not as traditionally popular as its Chicago and New York counterparts, is fast increasing in popularity throughout America. Via 313 provides a pretty good rendition of this new food fad. Their pie base, while gluten-free, is as thick and doughy as the normal ones. Do note that gluten-free pizzas are only available in the four-square serving, at an extra 3 USD.
