A rustic guest room building, fresh seafood meals, a fresh flowing onsen stocked with ameneties, and polite yet warm hospitality make you think that a night here would cost more than 20000 JPY per person but you would be wrong. Even before a holiday you can stay affordably at this onsen inn in Kumamoto’s Amakusa. Even now at the end of 2014 you can easily get reservations, and an added bonus, they welcome babies too! We visit Yunosato Kureyon where once you visit you are hooked and will come back.

Guest rooms built with obsession in traditional ways such as Yakisugi Ita and stone walls from Dejima Nagasaki.

When you are checking into Yunosato Kureyon you are wrapped in the aroma of wood. The buildings are all built in wood, and the exterior is covered in the traditional building material Yakisugi Ita which lets off a particular aroma. Also the stones in the stone walls are leftovers from Nagasaki’s Dejima when they rebuilt the islands structures. So many points of obsession. On the pathway to the guest building there are many plants and even a subtly placed Shiitake growing tree, and in the evening the area releases a very luxurious moist aroma.

Get warm in fresh flowing hot spring water! Plenty of amenities at this onsen.

After settling down a bit post check in, the best way to relax before dinner would be a trip to the onsen bath. At Yunosato Kureyon there are rooms that have onsen baths attached and those that don’t. The onsen attached to the room is a colorful Goemonburo (a bath that is heated from directly underneath., but the main communal bath house is an outdoor bath which is my recommendation. They provide an adorable bag for you to take your stuff to the bath house.

The awesome thing here is they provide both bath towels and face towels at the big bath house. For those onsen lovers that like to hop in and out many times, having a clean towel each time to dry off is a rare luxury. There is also makeup remover, and facial scrubs, and in the ladies bath there is body lotion, so if you forget to bring your own its fine they have you covered.

But wait there’s more, there are even baby baths for the kids, and small stools, and bowls, body soap, and even toy watering cans, for the kids to bathe comfortably.

Spiny lobster, abalone, sea urchin, and wagyu! An opulent dinner that you won't forget soon!

Dinner is served at the restaurant “Ruri”. It doesn’t provide private rooms but the tables have ample space between them and you can spread out easily. Not only that, when you stick your feet into the sunken kotatsu (low table with heat source) in the floor inside is a fluffy cushioned area.! Its striking how considerate they are to think of the bottom of your feet after an onsen bath.

After some anticipation the gourmet cuisine arrives on a beautiful Amakusa specially made plate. First a sashimi boat, then grilled spiny lobster, preserved Uni, sautéed abalone, and more. They do spoil you good here but they don’t just rely on good ingredients alone at Yunosato Kureyon. They serve a chawanmushi (a savory steamed egg custard with assorted ingredients) with cheese on top, or a grated yam and egg white mousse with duck meat. They stick with the basics but can adapt with ease and to perfection with their dishes. Also, beers are only 500 JPY, a full bottle of wine is only 1500 JPY, so everything is affordable to say the least.

They are fully prepared for children as well. There are booster seats, tableware, and they bring out rice from the get go, as well as changing ingredients in the chawanmushi to corn and other things kids like. There is also a play area with coloring books, cards, and toys next to the front area of the restaurant.

Wake up with natural light filling in from the skylight, an opulent way to wake in the morning!

After dinner when you enter your room the futons are out already for you. Of course you can just go right to bed but they will also bring your leftover desserts and drinks so you can have a night cap before bed with some snacks.

Depending on the room there are skylights, and you can wake to natural sunlight in the morning. The ceilings are fairly high so the room is filled with the natural rays, waking you feeling good. Taking a dip in the bath before breakfast is a luxury on an onsen trip isn’t it?

Also, in the room are a sketch book and some crayons so why not leave a sketch or two?

A healthy breakfast with everything you need for the day to come!

a healthy breakfast with everything you need for the day to come!

At “Ruri” not only is dinner extravagant so is breakfast. The spiny lobster remnants are turned into miso soup, the nourishment and umami are in full effect. There are even dishes that are so elaborate like the Taro fritters they make you question is this really breakfast?

Grilled fish, spicy cod roe, natto, poached egg, hijiki, shirasu… the list goes on. Not only do they serve some fresh home grown rice that is perfection in a bowl, they also provide milk, juice, salad, yogurt, roll breads, and sandwiches!

Most won’t be able to finish all that so they will pack up the sandwiches for you to take with you. The leftover rice is turned into rice balls, and they also give you some fried chicken to boot. Those that have breakfast plans will most likely pass but this is a welcome style of breakfast for those travelling with kids.

You are sure to be a repeat visitor even if you live far from Yunosato Kureyon!

Everything is luxurious here, but extravagance isn’t all, their consideration for everything is what makes this place shine. And with a price of only 16800 for a room without an onsen, and no price hikes for holidays or if you are staying in a pair, it is a very considerately priced place to visit. Jetstar the discount airline flies to Kumamoto from Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, so visiting from the big 3 cities is easy as well. I urge you to visit before it becomes a popular destination and you can’t get reservations.
