4. Moody Mansion

Port Isabel Lighthouse’s history is related to the Civil War. It was constructed to serve the mariners along the Texas coastline. It is still standing proudly in the oldest town of Texas, Port Isabel. Now its surrounding ground and the Port Isabel Lighthouse have turned into a park. There are 16 more lighthouses which were constructed along the Texas coastline, but the authorities have opened only this one to the public.

The history of Texas is full of several battles that have been fought on its soil and Sabine Pass Battleground is one of the important sites where the American Civil War was fought. This historic site is located in Port Arthur which was an important spot to supply troops. Today Sabine Pass Battleground symbolizes the destruction that war causes and pays homage to all the lives that had been lost in the Civil War. This site houses a statue of Lt. Richard Dowling who with his 46 men fought against Union troops, sank two gunboats, and successfully defended the land of Texas.

9. San Felipe de Austin

In the early 1800s, back when Mexico was ruling over Texas, several colonies were building up by the settlers all across Texas. San Felipe de Austin was one of the places where settlers came and constructed the colony. Today, it is a State Historic Site where visitors can tour the on-site museum. Although you won’t get to see the original colony because it was destroyed when the residents fled, you can see the replicated cabins.
