Sorrento is a town in southern Italy, close to Naples and Pompeii. It has a rich history as part of the Roman empire, with the oldest ruins dating back to 600 BC. It is a town that was under the control of a number of different powers including the Roman and Byzantium empires, the Duchy of Naples, the Guaimar IV of Salerno and the Neopolitan Republic.

In 1861, it joined the Kingdom of Italy and is now one of the premier tourist destinations in the country.
