Popular annual events
Royal Langkawi International Regatta: Hosted by Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Malaysia’s only award-winning marina, the regatta firmly puts Langkawi on the list of the most premier sailing locations in the world. The competition saw more than 30 boats participating in 2024, and rest assured it’s a great event to get in deep to the island’s coastal beauty. The regatta dates for 2025 are yet to be announced, but you can expect it to follow a similar schedule to 2024’s competition, which was held from January 15th to the 20th.
Le Tour de Langkawi: Calling it a mere bicycle race would be an understatement as the internationally renowned Le Tour de Langkawi returns for its 28th edition. The 1st leg of the race is to be held on Langkawi itself and features a circular route over the island. It is held between late September and early October each year. I’d love to visit around this time to take a closer look at the special bikes the racers use!
Travel Advisory
- If you're not flying into Langkawi International Airport, the next best way to get to the island is to catch the ferry. Ferries operate from Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis, and Satun to Kuah Jetty, and Kuala Perlis has ferries to Langkawi every 45 minutes. The ferry trip from Kuala Perlis usually takes a little more than an hour. You can book ferry tickets online.

Beach life in Langkawi
As a pristine island situated in the Strait of Malacca, it’s no surprise that Langkawi has many spectacular beaches. Its most popular beach is Pantai Cenang, which is located right by Langkawi International Airport. The beach is said to be great for watersports and swimming. Families will have a fun time here!
There’s also Tanjung Rhu Beach, located in the north of the island and famous for its annually held Sandbar Walk where participants hike along the tidal sandbar linking the beach to Chabang and Kelam Baya Island. It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset. To catch a great sunrise, you should head to Gunung Raya, the tallest mountain on the island. The Malaysian favorite, laksa, a kind of noodle soup, remains popular in Langkawi.
The dry season, extending roughly from December to February, is the best time to visit the island as you can enjoy long days at the beach without having to worry about rain.
