Sisters of Saint Benedict Monastery is set centrally in Ferdinand, in the American state of Indiana. Also called the Monastery of Immaculate Conception, it attracts visitors from different corners of the country. The scenic beauty of the monastery attracts all and it is the home to one of the biggest communities of the Benedict sisters in America. The monastery is situated about 15 minutes from St. Meinrad Archabbey. Set up in 1867, there are 89 angels present all through the church. Out of these 16 angels are represented in the glass windows that surround the dome. Guided tours are also available so that you can be familiar with the history of this monastery.

2. Saint Meinrad Archabbey

You can avail of a guided tour to explore the Saint Meinrad Archabbey thoroughly and properly. Located in Spencer County in the state of Indiana, it is a Roman Catholic Church and was established by some monks from Switzerland’s Einsiedeln Abbey in 1864. Today, the monastery houses around 85 monks, who live, pray, and work here. The monastery was named after a monk called St. Meinrad who passed away in 1861. It is about 15 minutes from Ferdinand’s Saint Meinrad Archabbey. There are only 11 archabbeys in the world and just two in the United States of America.

Set up by Ferdinand’s Benedictine Sisters in the state of Indiana, Our Lady of Grace is one of the major monasteries in the state. It was founded after the Archbishop of Indianapolis, Paul C. Schulte wished to set up a shelter for elderly people in his diocese. The Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center, which was earlier known as Our Lady of Grace Academy is attached to this monastery. In 1978, a new ministry started after the closure of the academy. The St. Paul Hermitage Retirement & Nursing Care facility is also situated on the grounds of the monastery.

5. Poor Clare Sisters


Poor Clair Sisters is a monastery located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and houses a community of Poor Clare nuns. The community was set up as a private association under Kevin C Rhoades, the Bishop in 2012, in Fort Wayne’s Diocese of the state. The nuns here are not permitted to attend to phone or mobile calls and they do not have any access to the Internet. One needs to write to them for any kind of inquires.

6. Gaden Khachoe Shing Monastery

This Buddhist monastery in Indiana focuses on the preservation of the teachings of Lord Buddha for the welfare of all human beings. In the 15th century, Je Tsongkhapa, the great master, set up the lineage in Tibet. Located in Bloomington, Indiana, the Gaden Khachoe Shing Monastery was formally opened in the year 2007. Gaden refers to heaven or a pure land of Maitreya Buddha who is believed to be the next Buddha to arrive on the earth. Khachoe, on the other hand, refers to the pure land belonging to Vajrayogini, the female Buddha.

Carmelite Monastery is set on the top of a hill in South Terre Haute and houses 16 nuns belonging to an international community. The nuns living in this monastery follow an extremely rigid schedule and live in isolation. Their rituals start at 5.30am and lasts till 11pm. One of the top monasteries in the state, the Carmel community inside is quite self-sufficient. The nuns sell the vegetables and fruits of their garden and do most of their own works including making rosaries, printing, and painting. A visit to this beautiful monastery should be definitely on your cards if you plan a vacation in Indiana.
