Things to do / highlights
Romanesque sculptures / Gothic masterpieces
The gorgeous architecture of this tourist attraction may garner a great deal of attention but the collection of artwork is just as alluring. Possessing 4,000 incredible pieces, this museum’s showcase is evenly divided between paintings and sculptures. Marvel at French masters like Ingres, Courbet, Corot, and, of course, famed painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Enjoy renowned masterpieces like the Sultan of Morocco by Eugene Delacroix and Mankind before the Flood by Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem. The Romanesque and Southern Gothic sculptures are certainly the most extraordinary and dramatic so don’t forget to check them out, as well as works by famous sculpturer Rodin.
Music at the museum
What better way to enjoy music than in the museum’s opulent setting. Throughout the year Musee Des Augustins hosts a variety of concerts replete with well-known performers and melodic sounds. Every Wednesday the museum hosts an organ-music concert. Entry is free when you present your museum ticket. From October to May you won’t want to miss The Renaissance Arts concert offering music from the Middle Ages to contemporary tunes.
Gallery of gargoyles
Make a point to stop and admire the army of whimsical and eye-catching Romanesque gargoyles inhabiting the handsome 14-century cloisters that form a wonderful backdrop to the entire ground. You can then relish the tranquility of the beautiful lush medieval garden area.
