In the northern province of Uttarakhand, India, you will find the lovely town of Rishikesh. Rishikesh is known as the yoga capital of the world and it’s no surprise why. The town is more rural than urban and is entirely surrounded by nature. There are also many temples in Rishikesh, and the Ganges River - where the town sits - is considered to be holy. The serene ambiance is the perfect place to meditate and do yoga. But that’s not the only thing this place is known for. Among its beautiful mountains hides a gem for those who wish to fully take in the tranquility of the place: Neer Garh Waterfalls. Located less than five kilometers (three miles) from Lakshman Jhula, the bridge above Ganges River, Neer Garh is a natural wonder of three waterfalls that gracefully stumble down rocky cliffs into crystal blue pools. It’s a perfect haven for those who want to get away from the urban jungle and get lost, literally, in nature. To further pique your interest in this beautiful spot, check out our guide to Neer Garh Waterfalls, Rishikesh below.

Things to do / Highlights

Hiking/trekking

This is arguably the only way to get to the best spot of Neer Garh. Though the first small falls can be easily accessed 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the entrance, you still have to walk up further for 2 to 3 kilometers (1 to 2 miles) to get to the two-tier falls, which is the main attraction and the biggest falls in Neer Garh. You will have to go up steep cliffs and steps to get to the hidden gem that is the two-tier falls. Don’t worry though - along the way, there are several resting spots and plenty of great photo opportunities.

Swimming and bathing

Reward yourself after that long trek by taking a dip in the pools. Get yourself a natural back massage under the majestic falls and simply relax the day away. You will definitely lose yourself in nature as the place is completely peaceful and tranquil, with nothing but the sound of the crashing falls and perhaps some chirping birds here and there. Be prepared for the chilly waters though! But it might be just what you will need after sweating it out during the hike.

Other activities

There are also other activities you can do while at the falls. If you’re in a group like with your family or friends, why not go for a picnic after taking a swim? If you’re alone or with a buddy or partner, you can also take the moment to do some yoga. It’s what the place is known for, after all. Whatever activity you decide to do, it will surely be a relaxing one simply because of the serene surroundings.

Travelers tips

Get ready to hike

As mentioned, the only way to reach the very heart of Neer Garh is by hiking through steep cliffs. It wouldn’t be advisable for people with physical conditions to go, especially if you have difficulty breathing or mobility issues. You should be physically fit to climb to get to the falls. It’s going to be tiring, that’s for sure, but there are rest spots along the way. And rest assured, the reward waiting for you at the top will be worth it. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes and proper footwear, but don’t forget to bring your swimwear too!

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Neer Garh is nearly almost any time of the year, but you will have to factor in the seasons. Winter months, specifically November to February can become colder than usual. Remember that Rishikesh is up north, so the temperature is cooler than down south. On top of that, Neer Garh is located in the mountains, so the waters can become chilly. It’s best to go after the monsoon season so you won’t be bothered by the rain. Make sure to check the weather before you head off to Rishikesh so you’ll have the best experience. Additionally, Neer Garh is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm and expect a lot of crowds towards midday. To experience full solitude, try going early in the morning before 9 am or late in the afternoon after 5 pm; you’ll probably have the falls almost to yourself.
