You’re in Gaborone and wondering what you should do? When in doubt, just go party. The nightlife scene in Gaborone is quite lively, although it’s not Berlin. Most places don’t do parties until 7 or 8 in the morning. There are, however, many choices, depending on your preferences and your mood, from dancing places to hanging out places to some samba parties. So if you’re in town during the weekend, don’t miss out on a fun night out. Here’s a list of eight most popular places, so that you have a better idea what your choices are.

1. Masa Square

Masa Square is a good place to start the night as it offers more options. Right in front of the Masa Square Hotel, there are about three or four good bars to choose from. Especially during weekends, the area is lively and full of party people. Although not cheap, the cocktails on offer are creative.

The highlight at Chez Nicolas Lounge and Jessys Bistro is the music, making it a very good dancing spot. They often organize thematic parties. The music varies, so if you happen to go there more than once, you won’t have to dance to the same music all the time. The service can be a bit slow at times, but the general atmosphere makes up for it.

There are actually two Rodizios in Gaborone. One is refereed to as “Riverwalk” and the other one as “Phakalane,” based on their location. Although they serve the same food, the atmosphere at Phakalane is cozier. This is the place for meat lovers or samba dancers, as the two things Rodizio is famous for are its samba parties and its skewers of meat. It’s the place to combine food, party and Brazilian cocktails.

If you’re a jazz fan, this place located in the western part of the city is the right bar for you. They sometimes organize events with live music, but even when there’s no live music, their music selection is pretty good. People who choose The Millennium Jazz Bar are usually not part of the very young party crowd, but rather a bit older.

It might not be the most animated capital city in the world, it might not be the most cultural city ever nor the most historic place, but it’s worth it to become friends with Gaborone. Why? Because it will put Botswana and the ongoing economic development process of the country into perspective for you. So make sure that for you it will be Gabs, not the formal Gaborone.
