Kelleys Island was known among British settlers as Sandusky Island. It was rechristened in 1840 by brothers Datus and Irad Kelley. It is a Devonian limestone and dolomite ridge. On the south shore, it has a large limestone rock with petroglyphs carved by the indigenous inhabitants.
