Referred as the “capita do Norte” (the capital in the North), Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and has rich and varied culinary traditions. With more than thousands of restaurants in town, it can be difficult to pick the right one to experience the best the city has to offer. We made a selection of the top 10 restaurants for you to try the best of the best and discover this rich cuisine!

1. Mao Travessa

Nestled in a small street close to the larger Rua de Cedofeita, Mao Travessa is a small and charming restaurant with an open kitchen serving a wide variety of crepes, tapas, and a few salads. The staff is very friendly and speak several languages, helping tourists to find their way through the extensive menu. The selection of wine is very large as well and covers local and international wines. We highly recommend the crepes, a pure delight to your taste buds! Make sure to book your table as the restaurant is busy throughout the whole day!

Featuring local specialties such as bacalhau (cod fish), francesinha (local cheese sandwich) or even grilled octopus, Cafe Luso brings you the best of Porto in extremely generous portions! Most of the dishes for one are actually good to be shared at two. We loved the friendliness of the staff and the wide selection of dishes on the menu. The restaurant, although being nestled in a small street, is usually quite busy.

4. Adega Do Conde

Nestled in a narrow street close to the Douro river, Adega Do Conde is a small and charming restaurant away from the touristic places closer to the river. Brace yourself for a slow and typically local service but the food is worth it! The menu changes every day depending on the supplies they receive.

Their tripas are the best! This dish is not for everyone but if you like tripe, you will love this restaurant! Their sardines are delicious as well and very big!

Do not expect a fancy place or an elegant seating at Bufete Fase. Despite its simple and basic decor, the restaurant is renowned by locals to serve the best Francesinha in town. This typical sandwich of ham, cheese, sausage and roast meat covered by a layer of cheese is an institution in Portugal and Porto. If locals say it’s the best, we are sure to get the best!
