Mantua - known to the Italians as Mantova - is a city that gains in reputation with each year that passes. In 2007, it, along with nearby Sabbioneta, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2016, it was declared the Italian Capital of Culture, which, as you can imagine, is no small boast. This year, it was also declared the Italian Capital of Gastronomy - and, in a country where food is of such huge importance, that’s a hotly contested title, too.

And then there is the setting, which makes Mantua truly magnificent. It is surrounded by three artificial lakes, placed there in the 12th century as a defense against invasion. Add to that a range of Renaissance-era buildings, of which the Palazzo Te is the most notable, and a collection of similarly stunning architecture, and you’ve got a city which will live long in any tourist’s memory. So, if you’re considering it for a holiday, there’s just one more question: Where do you stay? Read on to learn about the nine best places to stay in Mantua, Italy!

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on April 10, 2026.

The reception staff will be happy to recommend a number of excellent cafes nearby for breakfast and will provide you with a token so that breakfast is on the house. In short, it’s a perfect place to start your stay in Mantua.

5. Fisherman’s Village: Accommodation for up to six people (from 109 USD (91 EUR))

The Fisherman’s Village is a group of several houses clustered around a church on the banks of the Mincio River. These spacious accommodations in the village of Borgo Angeli are particularly special, as they have a view over the river and over banks of lotus flowers. Along with a beautiful gothic church, this makes for a spectacularly scenic location, with all modern conveniences and served by a housekeeper.

6. Mortara Suite: A delightful, charming apartment (from 180 USD (150 EUR))

The Mortara Suite is located in a 17th-century building, in the historic heart of Mantua, and, due to refurbishment, is a highly modern accommodation in an antiquated setting. With important monuments and excellent restaurants on the doorstep, this is a wonderfully located place. With floors that can be heated or cooled to suit the weather outside, it’s also a perfect haven from those days when the climate isn’t playing ball.

7. B&B Casa del Teatro: Small, exclusive and luxurious (from USD 112)

This B&B is not one of Mantua’s larger accommodations, having only space for six guests at a time. That intimacy is what gives it much of its charm, as they can focus on each room equally, and the elegance, comfort and attention to detail make it a perfect base for travellers. You can start your day with a classic Italian breakfast (gluten-free options are included), and each room has a mini-fridge - so you can save all the great food you’ll buy in Mantua!

8. Casa Museo Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga: 17th-Century opulence (from USD 217)

The Casa Gonzaga, as we’ll call it here to save space, is a lodging as grand as its name. Named for a noble member of the family who ruled Mantua from the 13th century, it is a listed building and part of the Italian Historic Housing Association. As the name suggests, it’s a former palace, part museum, and the rooms in which you sleep may well contain original features from the palace building. Nonetheless, as historic as it is, there are modern touches, with LCD TVs and laptops available in all rooms.
