Denali National Park and Preserve is a pristine vast wilderness that is known for its rich wildlife. It is well suited for exciting adventures, may it be mountaineering or even camping, and will make the perfect destination for those who enjoy slow traveling like me. Visit this place to discover an abundance of dinosaur fossils in Denali’s 70 million-year-old Cantwell Formation, watch Aurora Borealis, or just marvel at the glaciers that cover 1,000,000 acres (404,685.6 hectares) of Denali. Learn the region’s rich history and find out how it remains an important place for Alaska natives.

Travel Advisory

Operations and closures:

  • Due to the increasingly unstable conditions of the Pretty Rocks Landslide and the ongoing Polychrome Area Plan project, Denali Park Road at Mile 43 will remain closed to vehicular traffic along with the few campgrounds and visitor areas beyond that point. These include the Igloo Creek Campground, Eielson Visitor Center, Toklat River Contact Station, and Wonder Lake Campground.

Travel information:

  • All guests visiting Denali National Park must purchase and receive entrance passes. A standard pass will cost around 15 USD per person. Guests below the age of 15 can visit for free. Annual passes are also available for 45 USD for up to four adults.
  • To access the park's developed campgrounds, you will need to secure a reservation before the date of your trip. These can be made as early as December 1st the year before said date.

Weather conditions:

  • Summer: During the months between May and early September, the average weather conditions are unpredictable. Some areas may receive snowfall and chilly temperatures while others may experience bone-dry conditions. Additionally, the period between June and August sees the park at its wettest.
  • Winter: Beginning in October, the temperatures range from -40°F (-40°C) to around 20°F (-7°C). The snow is also thick enough to allow for classic winter activities, such as skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing.

One of the best ways to explore the only road bisecting the national park is through a trailer or a motorhome. Similarly to one of the cabins near Denali National Park, a trailer offers full comfort and convenience, even when you’re away from the hustle and bustle of city life. 1. Enjoy an all-season Alaskan trip with a 2021 Forest River IBEX (from USD 120)

The Denali National Park and its nearby attractions are idyllic for your ambitious Alaskan adventure, and what better way to go to all these places than in this compact trailer? Weighing under 5,000 lb (2,268 kg), it can easily be hooked to a regular SUV or mid-size truck.

Basic amenities such as a bathroom and an outdoor shower are included in the package. There’s also a kitchen where I can see myself whipping up simple but delicious meals on the road. Solar panels help power up much of the trailer’s electronics, and for road trips of more than three nights, you’ll get a generator for free for a more convenient experience. If you want to make your journey through Alaska a little more special, you can always approach the owner for advice, tips, and recommendations!

More information about the rental:

  • Included with the trailer is the CURT Echo Brake Controller, a Bluetooth-powered set that helps control the trailer breaks with a tap on your smartphone. Guests will need to download the corresponding app first to fully access the feature.
  • Penalties of up to 1,000 USD are levied for those who go off-road on unpaved highways, clean fish inside the trailer, or smoke in the rig without the express permission of the host.
  • If you don't want to deal with filling up the propane tank or dumping waste out of the trailer—or forgot to do both of them while on the road—you can pay an additional 60 USD and 120 USD, respectively, on top of renting fees.

2. Have a fuss-free journey in a 2020 Thor Freedom Elite (from USD 325)

Whether you’re new to RV camping or looking for something easier to drive, this 2020 Thor Freedom Elite vehicle can help get you and your loved ones to Denali National Park with fewer problems. Lovingly called “Ginger,” the diesel-powered unit offers outstanding fuel economy and comes with an automatic transmission.

Ginger also offers plenty of comfortable amenities to boot. With the inclusion of heating and cooling facilities, an attached fridge, and a propane generator plus hot water on demand, it will guarantee you a comfortable off-grid camping experience. The RV also offers a huge storage capacity as well as three bed spaces, including the convertible dining area and upper bunk.

More information about the rental:

  • If you're flying to Alaska from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport or staying in the Anchorage area, you can request the hosts to have Ginger delivered and picked up at a nominal fee.
  • The RV must stay on paved state and local roads at all times. Off-roading is prohibited.
  • It must also stay within the boundaries of Alaska. You cannot take Ginger beyond the state border.
  • The hosts, Fred and Catherine, recommend checking out Alaska's many state or local parks where you can try hiking, fishing, and more! I know I'd be happy to fry up some fresh fish in this rental.

Guest review:

  • "Fred and Catherine were so accommodating and easy to work with. They provided all the extras we needed and were flexible on drop-off and pick-up times/locations. Fred answered our texts during the trip when we had questions about the RV. We slept well on the queen bed. The upper bunk was a little much for two adults for 11 nights but the other couple traveling with us said it was comfortable for the most part... I would highly recommend this rental." - Susan G.
