Regions in Japan have their various local dishes, and ramen noodles have flavours that differ distinctly across the country. The Tanukikoji area found in central Sapporo is famous for its numerous eateries that have been lining the streets for over 140 years. Among the various stores there is Sankakuyama Goemon Ramen, a shop that specialises in Soy Sauce based Ramen.

The small building of Sankakuyama Goemon Ramen reminds one of the history it holds, and the fantastic Shoyu Ramen (soy sauce ramen) comes with marvellous soup, chewy ramen noodles and char siu (roasted pork meat). You can also try out the salt based ramen or miso ramen in winter!

Apart from enjoying the delicious ramen noodles in the shop, you can also purchase the “Omiyage Ramen” which will allow you to enjoy the taste of Sankakuyama Goemon Ramen at home!

Although Sapporo is famous for its miso-based Sapporo ramen, there are stalls that specialise in different tastes as well.

At Ramen Toranoko, the exclusive Toranoko Ramen is famous for its spiciness. 4 different levels of spiciness can be selected for the Toranoko Ramen which includes 8 types of spice such as basil. Yet, the pork broth soup and char siu (roasted pork meat) create a fantastic harmony, allowing a delectable and enjoyable experience instead of a fire-breathing one.

Nanatsuki is a ramen shop that is most famous for its vegetable ramen. The chicken-based soup comes with mashed potatoes, carrots, onions and different types of vegetables. You can also choose toppings such as beans and char siu for those who need some meat in their dish!

The vegetables will fill your bowl and you can also choose other menus such as miso based soup. Make sure you visit Nanatsuki early as they will close once the soup is sold out!

Tomatomen Vegie (Tomato Noodles Vegie) is a tomato based shop that is found near Shiroishi station.

Vegie is most famous for its Tomato Noodle that comes with an extremely rich quantity of vegetables including tomatoes, carrots, cabbage and more. Great for those who need more vegetables in their life, Vegie also provides customers with napkins and you will not have to worry about dirtying your clothes! It is also recommended that you try their fried Onigiri (Japanese rice balls) which are filled with cheese. It is great when eaten together with the tomato-based soup!

Amewa, Yasasiku literally means “be gentle when raining”, and is a unique name for an eatery. So is their recipe and the ramen served in Amewa, Yasasiku are dishes that you cannot enjoy elsewhere.

Some of the dishes available there are the Namahamu to Kakesoba (raw ham soba) and Macha Ae Karatsukemen (spicy noodles with Matcha). Their unique recipe may surprise you at first, but they all come with a new yet delicious taste. Amewa, Yasasiku is great for ramen lovers who want to try something special!

7. Sapporo’s Picante is great for first timers!

Picante is a Soup Curry shop with several branches around Hokkaido. The Soup Curry served at Picante comes with plenty of vegetables such as carrots, eggplant and green beans filling the bowl, and is relatively creamy.

There are various types of Soup Curry available in Picante such as Prawn Soup, as well as daily specials. After selecting your type of Soup Curry, you will select your main dish such as chicken legs and beef, followed by a choice from 5 levels of spiciness. For the brave souls, go for the spiciest level 5! There are also other toppings available.

The main branch of Picante is located near Hokkaido University and is always packed with students. Another branch, on the other hand, is located just 5 minutes from Sapporo station by foot and it is recommended that you visit this store instead. It is still common for queues to develop during lunch hours so plan your time accordingly!

8. Old-school Soup Curry from Coffee House

Now, Coffee House doesn’t sound exactly like a Soup Curry shop. One might be inclined to think that this is one of the “latest trending shops” which serves Soup Curry with coffee, but it is quite the opposite.

Coffee House was opened in 1977 and is a “Soup Curry store by the train tracks”, located along the train tracks near the Odori Nishi 4 Chome station of the Sapporo Streetcar. It has been loved by locals throughout and the Soup Curry served here is smooth.

True to its name, the shop also serves delectable coffee so make sure you order them too!

Soul Store is a Soup Curry store that is perfect for those who love vegetables. Located conveniently just 10 minutes from Odori station, the ingredients in Soul Store are locally grown and are the best picks of the season.

One of the most famous dishes on the menu is the fried burdock - the huge sticks protruding out of the soup in the photo. Together with the fried burdocks, the chicken-based Soup Curry creates a fantastic harmony of spiciness and sweetness from the vegetables.

Ichimonji Coffee Shop is a place where you can not only enjoy Sapporo’s delicious Soup Curry, but also the delicious Western-style curry.

Only 11 seats are available at Ichimonji Coffee Shop and many customers come back frequently - the curry served at this eatery is just too fantastic. The Soup Curry served is filled with vegetables while the black colour Western-style curry is extremely fragrant.

Although Ichimonji Coffee Shop is located at a slightly inconvenient location, it is definitely worth the visit!

At Okushiba Shoten, you will order your dish in a systematic manner - type of soup, menu, toppings, level of spiciness and amount of rice. There are several soups available such as shrimp soup and chicken soup. It is recommended that you try their most popular dish - the chicken and vegetable soup curry. When you order their soup curry, fried chicken and vegetables will be served on a stick!
