With the 13 block stretch of North Michigan Avenue dedicated to shops, shops, and more shops, The Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago is definitely a shopaholic’s dream come true. Running from the Chicago River to Oak Street, the Mag Mile in Chicago is akin to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, with big brand names like Ann Taylor, Burberry, Tiffany & Co, Guess, and the list goes on. However, don’t think that the Mag Mile is all about upscale shopping; whether you are looking for children’s stuff or bargain buys, there is a shop for everyone. Read on to find out where to get the best buys!
Check out Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx and Marshalls for bargain buys
For those who like branded items but are reluctant to pay for them at their original price, Nordstrom Rack is definitely the shop for you! As the off-price retail division of Nordstrom Inc, it sells quality items at up to 70% off everyday prices. Nordstrom Rack is my go-to place whenever I am in the mood for bargain hunting. With racks and racks of off-season branded goods, you will have a whale of a time checking out the different dresses, jackets, shoes, handbags etc. I managed to buy a brand new Michael Kors dress with the price slashed from 148 USD to less than 30 USD, and a BCBG cocktail dress cut from 398 USD to about 25 USD. How is that for a bargain?!
TJ Maxx and Marshalls have a similar concept, where you can get brand new goods at discounted prices. For those heading to TJ Maxx, try to look for items with yellow tags because this means it is the lowest price the items can possibly go. I once managed to get a yellow-tagged French Connection dress at 5 USD in TJ Maxx. Bargain hunters, remember to come with enough money for your shopping spree!

Check out the Lego and American Girl stores for children’s buys
Also inside Water Tower Place are the American Girl and Lego stores, which will definitely cater to what children want. Little girls will love spending time in the pink American Girl paradise spanning over 4800 square metres (52000 square feet) with aisles and aisles of dolls, doll’s clothing, doll accessories, with even a doll hair salon and doll hospital! You can get your American Girl doll’s hair styled and also customise a t-shirt for your doll to wear. Just beside the American Girl store is a Lego store, which is a great place for little boys and girls to check out the latest Lego figurines and models.
A bit of Disney magic in Disney Store
If you have a child with you, you have to bring him or her to the magical Disney Store in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Disney Store is stocked full of official Disney merchandise such as plush toys and princessy sparkly dresses, which even adults like me will swoon over.

Take a stroll along the Chicago River before proceeding for shopping
One good thing about shopping along the Magnificent Mile is that it is simply one long stretch of shopping street, and therefore you will have an easy time finding the shop you want. Other than those mentioned above, there are still many big brands that line the street. There are usually bigger sales if you go when it is approaching a public holiday, such as Presidents’ Day or Veterans Day. If you are not short on time, do take some time to take a stroll along the beautiful Chicago River, which is alongside the Magnificent Mile, before proceeding with some serious shopping. The nearest CTA train station is Grand station on the red line.
