Peru is home to some of the best hostels in South America since it is a country famous to backpackers. Hostels give travellers a chance to mingle with people from other countries at a cost-effective price. Among all of the hostels in Miraflores, the Puriwasi Hostel is one to look out for, as it is definitely a gem. It is in the middle of the city centre, has a great rooftop bar and extremely friendly staff.

Centrally located

The famous Puriwasi wall art serves as a convenient landmark for finding the hostel at night.

Located at the centre of Miraflores, the tourist suburb of Lima, Puriwasi is within walking distance to the main shops, restaurants and bars. It is a two-minute walk from Parque Kennedy (cat park) and Parque Central de Miraflores where there are souvenir markets and Latin American dance workshops on weeknights. It is also a ten-minute walk to the metro, making it very accessible to the rest of Lima city. Staying at Puriwasi means that you will be at the hub of all events and activities.

Vibrant open-air rooftop bar for free breakfast and nightlife

Another great thing about Puriwasi is its artsy open-air bar. The bar is the perfect place to meet other travellers as the hostel provides social games like ‘Giant Jenga’ and a foosball table. It is also a great place to read books while sunbathing on their lounge chairs.

In the morning, the open bar serves as a breakfast nook wherein you can get as many teas, coffee and a variety of breads with butter and jam. If you prefer having hot breakfast, the large bar has a kitchen, which is available for all guests to use. They provide a fridge, pans, plates and cutleries so you do not have to worry about outsourcing them. One thing to note about this kitchen though, is the fact that it is shared. So, take what you need and leave the kitchen just as you first saw it.

Clean bunk-style rooms with safe lockers

When staying at hostels, travellers usually expect the very basic but you can be rest assured of thoughtful amenities on top of a good nights rest here. Puriwasi offers clean bunk-style rooms with large boxes on rollers to store your possessions. You can choose between a private room to an 8-bed room, according to your budget. The hostel provides clean sheets and an alpaca duvet to keep you warm at night.

The only downside in their rooms is the fact that their windows do not fully shut. Nothing to worry though because your belongings will not get wet due to an overlay in the building’s structure above the windows. However, this means that on Friday night and weekends, it can get quite loud.

Nonetheless, this hostel is perfectly suitable to young travellers who are always on the go and are very particular with cleanliness.

Extremely friendly staff

Latin American people are known for their delicious cuisine, traditional dances and, most importantly, vivacious personalities. The staff at Puriwasi definitely has all of these. For the two weeks that I stayed with them, I was able to build a strong relationship with all of the staff. With three permanent staff switching different time shifts and two bartenders, it is very easy to befriend and find someone to talk to throughout your stay.

The staff also helps you with all things travellers need. They translate confusing instructions from Spanish to English and help you book last minute train rides. If you ask nicely, they even lend you their metro card for the day.

Stay for cheap at one of Miraflores’ best hostels

There was nothing short of awesome when it comes to staying and meeting other travellers at Puriwasi. Perfect for backpackers, it had everything a traveller needs (clean rooms, free breakfast and informative staff) and wants (free breakfast and rooftop bar). With its great location, you will see more of Miraflores and Lima without breaking the bank.
