Ever thought about staying at a guesthouse? In Ubud, there is a place called Suastika Lodge in an east side neighborhood where you can stay in a traditional Balinese family compound and get a full experience by being immersed in the Balinese culture. This family of four (Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister) treat you as you are part of their family. From cooking you breakfast of banana pancakes to helping you plan your tours and recommending places to eat, you will feel at home with this family and want to adopt them as your own.
Location and cost
Located right on the edge of downtown Bali in a neighborhood, you are walking distance or a short motorbike ride away from most attractions and downtown area. There is a private school up the street where you can watch the Balinese children play and learn how to balance items on their head. There is a local restaurant within a couple blocks from your room that makes Indonesian dishes such as Pepes Tuna (Tuna wrapped in banana leaf with spices). The cost to stay here ranges from 16.00 USD to 20.00 USD a night.
There are five rooms to choose from at this Balinese oasis. Two rooms are in a section right off the main house that are surrounded by bushes and mangosteen trees. The rooms at the back of the compound are surrounded by jungle and also mangosteen trees. If you go at the right time of year, you can get your mangosteen fill for free. Every morning, you are served your choice of banana or pineapple pancakes, omelets or made-to-order eggs and toast. All are served with a bowl of fresh fruit and tea or coffee. Free flowing filtered water is right outside your door.
Getting around and services
You can rent a motorbike on premises, but if you’re a solo traveler and aren’t comfortable with riding a bike, the owners will be happy to drop you off to shows and pick you up. There really is no need for a motorbike if you’re fit and can walk a couple miles a day. Laundry services are available for 6,000 IDR (0.44 USD) per Kilogram. You can get your duds cleaned and will be returned nicely folded and wrapped in saran wrap. Hint: Get your laundry done a day before you leave to make packing easier. Laundry takes 24 hours as they use the sun to dry your clothes so keep that in mind when you order this service. The owners are also there to help you plan tours and can help you hire a private driver to take you to the rice fields and temples and schedule your cooking classes for you.
Staying at the Suastika Lodge will leave you wanting to come back again to stay with this special family. From going to morning market with the family to having conversations with them in the evening while they make their offering baskets, you are sure to fall in love with them. Staying at a guesthouse is a one of a kind experience and will leave you with a sense of how the Balinese people live.
